Lostconfession: Just tested out the consumer preview of windows 8...

Wow Had issue installing it from the very beginning , Would not load driver and kept giving me error on disc driver reading I/O even though it was loading from a disc it couldnt find the DVD drive :/ But after 100's of attempts i used a friends PC and got it to load on an external HDD.

Then the boot up Seriously, when it loads its fast which is pretty neat. Since im running an old Quad core processor in window7 the jet engine of a heatsink fan roars up, in window 8 Quiet as a mouse. No fucking sounds. Here where things get intresting.. No driver are fully compatable YET to window 8. That is to be expected since they revamp windows, right?. But wait no win7/vista compatability troubleshoot, Issue for those running PCIe/USB doupler wireless adapter. Drop in the driver from a disc or download them from the manufacture website? Driver are still none compatable. so no wifi connection unless your tethered.

Start menu..When you create your account and boot in first it goes straight to the start menu or the metro UI... fucking shit hard to find anything useful, took me 15min looking through boxes to find the desktop. Found it but now to get back to startmenu??? No icon on the task bar..But wait... move the mouse to the lower left corner and click on nothing start menu brings you back to metro UI.... Okie what about control panel???? .......Still havent found it..... :/ Wow windows... great job ....

To actually access the control panel you go back to the desktop box, right click on the background and select costumize, then go to the search bar click on the directory of folder and select control panel.. thats the only fucking way.... talk about bring back window 3.0 in a modern way.....

No that doesn't suggest microsoft didnt think ahead for some people. to access costumizeable setting like transparenting, icon in the desktop or changing your own account profile picture or metro UI small selective background wallpaper just hover your mouse to the lower right of the desktop, guide up alittle and like hideable widget you get a small selection of toolbox. And no from there isnt away to access the control panel.. it has no search bar of ANY.

To log off and shut down you go back to the start menu, remeber its metro UI, click on your account name and pull down, this will log you off. After you have logged off and yes you must log off before you shut down.. you go to the icon, rightclick and guide down to shutdown.... "SIMPLE" right people... again window 3.0 in a modern way

Personally even though its a consumer preview of window8 it still sucked, improve feature and add in the compatablity troubleshoot and it might be worth it over time.. It feels like a coperation window and not a media friend window.

oldskoolPunk: Sounds like they have made alot of core changes, which is good for performance but bad for user friendliness. I think the main push on this new release is cleanness and performance, so there are going to be some major UI changes I would assume.
Awesome review man thanks for the input !

the real slim DEEPy: when i went to load win8 server, i had the same issue with disk i/o error. i finally had to boot it from withing windows 7 64 bit. and maybe i did something wong, but there was no start menu or taskbar, just a command prompt. hey, im just LEARNING server os'es, i have no capacity for command prompt only- might as well learn linux server nand get with the terminal...

as for win8 desktop, i was unimpressed. the tiles are ugly and annoyying. someone must explain to me what metro ui is, cause all i got from it was gaudy blue tiles to replace icons and no start menu.

there could be possibly hundreds of tiles, depending on how many programs you have. it seemed very cumbersome- or maybe its just the learning curve... i hated it, i deleted it after just one session. seems like its designed for netbooks/smartphones and doesnt really interest me at all for desktop use.

now, if someone can tell me how to get to a taskbart/start menu for win server8, id be interested.

Lostconfession: Metro UI is VUI for the window moble. To make it an easy for user on window moble to organize application and feature to simple controll blocks. The only cool thing Metro on the window moble has is the "LIVE" feature which means when you look at the block any interaction within the program changes in the block as it happens. for instance Facebook, when you view it on the block you get a live interaction of people as they post. Now having said what it is and basicly where it comes from micorsoft wanted to use it in thier next line of operating system, WHY? to make it more user friendly for the next evo of user what they consider " internet 2.0 user friendly".. they wanted to make alot simplier for those to use. In reality they for see the next evolution of moble computing from laptop and netbook to tablets. Which is why the added Metro UI to the O.S. it is more useable and made for tablets but can still run on desktop or laptop or netbook without a touch screen ready technology.

Lostconfession: lol 1.1 had low voltage support of 3.3volt. Which didnt help boost data tranfer any faster then 1mb to 10mb a sec. version 2.0 USB had 5volt boost which gave you 10mb to 100mb per sec data tranfer and the new usb 3.0 gives you data transfer of 100mb to 1gb with the same voltage just a secondary data+ to help transfer more data.

I used to mess with USB cables all the time, fireware and USB is the same, you cut the wire and attach them properly you can make any firewire device USB or visversa.
the bullocks of firewire being better the USB is crap. Firewire requires two data + and data - which allows data transfer of 100mb to 1gb.

the real slim DEEPy: windows 95, i dont think, came standard with usb suport, but there might hae been an update to add it.

usb 2.0 supposedly has about 480mbps, firewire was about 400 mbps, and firewire 800 is 800mbps. usb 1.1 is slow, i dint rmember the transfer rate, bt your 10mbps sounds a little low. usb also taxes the processor, while firewire works independently of the processor.

windows 95 came with fat16 partitioning only, which only suports hard drives up to i think 8 gb. you have to use windows 98 to support larger hard drives. windoes 98 can partition a hard drive up to 32gb, but you can use a 3rd party partitioning tool to partition it larger, before installing windows 98 onto the drive. most boards of that era were limited to supporting 127 gb max hard drive partitions.
