A geomagnetic storm warning was made for the beginning of March and the Aurora Patrol Camera in Tasmania was watching for any that reached Tasmania.

I downloaded this video from the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology. A ten day record from the Patrol Camera is available from the website.

The Sun repeating weather features could mean that there is a ' geological ' reason for them.

An underlying ' hard ' surface like the Earths crust could have been changed by impacts from asteroids and the now unstable ground level is going through changes which are in turn impacting on the Suns weather causing events which we are able to see.




The Suns ' eleven year ' cycle which seemed to have altered recently also indicates that a change has taken place on the Sun.

"Coronal mass ejections do occur by themselves, but many are linked to flares. As a flare flashes and a bit of magnetic field comes undone, this can trigger a nearby filament (or prominence) to erupt as a CME. 
Sometimes those flares don’t even need to be nearby, Pesnell said.
“A flare will happen on one side of the sun, and a wave will propagate from that flare and hit a prominence on another end of the sun, and disrupt it so much that the filament will erupt,” Pesnell said. “Those are the cool ones.”

Referring to the only Sunspot visible, which is also situated at close to one end of the long filament;-

' The Tale Of The Tortoise And The Armadillo' was for some time a very popular public " saying" about science in the USA. I think the other animal was an armadillo.

It lasted for some time and evolved from a knowledgeable statement deriding a public claim regarding some scientific fact to a short story and verse which could be applied to most statements about science in the USA.

The sunspot had produced a X1 class CME only a few days ago and the large complex forming the spot looks like it will continue to send our CMEs for days.

Nasa sees ....coronal holes.

" NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, captured this solar image on March 16, 2015, which clearly shows two dark patches, known as coronal holes. The larger coronal hole of the two, near the southern pole, covers an estimated 6- to 8-percent of the total solar surface. While that may not sound significant, it is one of the largest polar holes scientists have observed in decades. The smaller coronal hole, towards the opposite pole, is long and narrow. It covers about 3.8 billion square miles on the sun - only about 0.16-percent of the solar surface. "

The southern hole covers 6-8 percent of the total solar surface on the 16th of March NASA estimates.

But we can see both holes were larger earlier in the year.

21st of March and the Sun still looks poorly.

Spaceweather said yesterday that there were no Earth side or facing coronal holes and today that there was no equatorial coronal holes.

The carefully chosen words don't compare well with the images.

Where there is a lot of activity it seems to be energetic and where there has been holes the more active surface has recovered the area.

So the old idea that the Sun will run out of fuel and so fade is less likely at the moment.

I think the right comparison is with geological change brought about by the impacts of comets and particularly comet Ison which produced a very large cloud of material as it dived in to the Sun. But that was almost exactly a year before. And so it seems the comet had caused some longer term effect which is now worsening the situation.

This cloud would have diminished the reactions taking place over a large area and combined with geological changes caused some areas to consume the available fuel unevenly.

' Normal ' material is thought to be fuel to the sun except radioactive material which stops the Suns reactions.

So rather like a fire being choked by too much wood being thrown on to it the sun is having trouble recovering its surface with the reactions we are used to.

The beat goes on.

The swirling patterns continue across the Sun with a rhythm.

While old ideas are being polished up;- http://arxiv.org/abs/1504.03700-the filaments have an hourly twist, NASA seems to be perturbed by this idea.

Spaceweather.com images of the sun sometimes miss a day and that missing picture follows the patterns on the sun.

It seems the square coronal hole which forms almost exactly in the centre of the suns disk is too much for NASA and when one is about to form the images stop.

The horned figures that appear to be mirrored in the north and south just escape the censor.

The images from various temperature ranges reveal the coronal holes are forming at one layer first rather like clouds over a tall mountain.

The theory that an impact cause geological change in the sun remains the best fit as what caused the change is still causing it.
