the more acidic the oceans, the less co2 it can capture/process, and the ocean ph has gone from 7 to 8, due to massive water pollution. everyone points the finger at the us's carbon emissions, while china and india have such pollutive industry, that birth defects are going thru the roof, particularly in india, such as the 8 limbed girl- the shiva-incarnate. and tree-boy, whose skin is of the nature of tree bark.

Corwin: Unlike you, Bumpa.... you're frickin' hilarious even when you're not trying to be. You pretending to be a scientist is the biggest joke of all.

So.... let's see... one day you're a climatologist... the next day you're an air-traffic controller who works for the Air Force...
... I suppose next you'll tell us you're a secret agent who works for the CIA?

Seeing sprites and elves from space

Every year, hundreds of people are killed or injured by lightning. But not all flashes of lightning strike the ground. Red sprites, blue jets and elves are forms of lightning that soar up towards space. Now European scientists are hoping to use the International Space Station (ISS) to learn more about these spectacular, but elusive, natural events.

We see lightning as a sudden, powerful surge of electricity that zigzags from the clouds to the ground. This deadly stroke heats the air to a temperature of 15,000 degrees Celsius – the same as the surface of the Sun.
Above the clouds, lightning is colourful - mainly red and blue - and spreads out to cover large areas of the upper atmosphere. Sometimes it even reaches the edge of outer space.

Sprites can be filmed by cameras placed at mountain
Over the last few years, scientists from the Danish National Space Centre have placed cameras on mountain tops to study the elves and sprites. However, it would be much easier to detect these flashes and study their effect on the atmosphere if instruments could be placed in space.

The Danish experts are now looking at the possibility of developing a number of instruments - known as the Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor - that could be flown on the ISS.

Such instruments would help scientists to understand how the flashes are created and how often they take place. They would also answer a key question that affects all of us – do elves and sprites remove ozone from the atmosphere, and so influence our climate?

Or:-

BERKELEY – Photos of red sprites, blue jets, elves and sprite halos are now flowing into the University of California, Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory from the first satellite instrument devoted to the study of these puzzling high-altitude lightning flashes.

All these phenomena are caused by the discharge of lightning from storm clouds into the upper atmosphere and ionosphere, which begins at an altitude of about 100 kilometers (63 miles). These discharges produce much different effects from the craggy lightning discharges to the ground. But little is known about them because they occur between 50 and 100 kilometers above the earth's surface, too high for airplanes to study and too low for most satellites.

The Taiwanese government, however, funded an instrument called The Imager of Sprites and Upper Atmospheric Lightning (ISUAL), which was built by a collaborative team of Taiwanese, Japanese and UC Berkeley scientists and launched aboard the Taiwanese satellite ROCSAT-2 (Republic of China Satellite 2) on May 20 of this year.

Though the discharges are not known to have any negative effect on high-flying planes, they could have an impact on atmospheric chemistry, Mende said. Electrical discharges in the atmosphere produce nitrogen oxides (NOx), one of the agents known to degrade the protective ozone layer. If low-intensity, cloud-ionosphere discharges were occurring all the time - some 1,000 electrically active thunderstorms are going on around the world at any given time - they may be producing a significant amount of nitrogen oxides.

Yes, I have worked on an air force base in the control tower as meteorologists often do.

I'm just a person who is fascinated by lightening and the effects it has on our climate. Our thunderstorms are increasing all over the globe, especially over our cities as it is warmer.

Sprites, elves and blue jets are relatively new discoveries and their effect on the different atmospheric layers are very interesting.

Bumpa: Thunderstorms are increasing all over the world Serabi, it's due to global warming. As the atmosphere warms up, there is more energy to drive storms. There appears to be an increase in tornadoes in USA also and these come from the same clouds as thunderstorms and hail.
