Science is magic! near50ohoh: it certainly came from superstition and magic like everything else did. esp medicine. old wives "studying" botany for care of family & their bruises and fevers. thing is some of those old wives were dead right. luck or trial & error? and surgery was from neighbor Mr butcher's use. pathology came from grave robbers, ew yuck, huh? just to get you started of course apothecaries small dosed with poisons for royalty maybe? i heard a rumor somewhere that alexander the great took doses of poison everyday so less likely to be murdered by assassins, now called cancer treatment and allergy maintenance plan. sometimes support and attention work better than any medicine can.. but slight of hand could be placebo effect i suppose. you just think you're getting care so you get better (illusion?). all that sage and incense in the air? i think people got better to just be able to breathe again, away from people's "prayers" for them. a place to get you started? looking forward to the discussion, hope it doesn't go all wacky like some threads i've been seeing Serabi: This post was put up to show how illusionists use simple science to create 'magic' tricks. Some of these magic tricks are just so unbelievable that it takes your breath away! So much for school kids who say 'I don't want to take science as a subject, I will never use it!" The same goes for math! We use it on a daily basis, especially geometry. Corwin: Great video, Sera. It reminds me of Junior-High... we had this amazing science teacher, and more than half of the curriculum was spent with hands-on experimentation. Everybody loved his class, and looked forward to breaking out the bunsen-burners and test-tubes, and performing real science first-hand. It certainly was very magical... like real-life Harry Potters. And as you say, so many practical uses in day to day life. I was particularly fascinated with the trick of distillation... although I may have been the only one of his students who took what I learned from his class and built his first moonshine-still at the age of 14. Thanks for posting them. They are the perfect size in time and information to teach how much fun science really is to my grandson.
