ColonelKusanagi: i say Jupiter because of the many reasons mentioned and because it's "my" planet and Saturn for aesthetics. i don't agree with the decision but Pluto is no longer considered a planet. Mercury because it's been acting funny ... and to whomever was wondering on it, yes Pluto is the ruler of death. StuckInTheSixties: Um ... (laughs) ... that was my lame attempt at a philosophical paradox or something ... Regarding Pluto: Pluto was properly demoted. The only reason to consider Pluto a planet is that it's been wrongly considered one for a long time. The problem is that if you consider Pluto a planet, then if you're going to be consistent, you'd have to also include a something like five other "minor-planets," all of which, like Pluto, exhibit characteristics that differ from the other "legitimate" planets, and lack other characteristics that the "legitimate" planets have. The only argument for calling Pluto a planet is because you don't want to hurt its feelings. (laughs) ColonelKusanagi: Something like that another beyond hurting it, and Sheldon's feelings is a heap of fiction central to it. ColonelKusanagi: greek mythology and sailor moon are 2 but there are so many more. i'm more miffed by the imbalance it sets in the sailor scouts but it's not all that important since the author did get Pluto and Saturn mixed up in their allegiances anyway but it is a peeve of mine none the less. also, when teaching kids to remember the name and order of planets what do they say now? My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Naan? i suppose it would make her smarter than 9 pizzas StuckInTheSixties: My (Mercury) Very (Venus) Educated (Earth) etc. etc. etc. It's a mnemonic. (Edited by StuckInTheSixties) LiptonCambell: But yea- including Pluto requires the inclusion of about half a dozen more "planets", and from what I heard, these "planets" are just bizarre....I mean, they found a "planet" that was larger than Pluto was....
StuckInTheSixties: Pluto is a MINOR planet. Maybe one day it'll grow up, get a driver's license, be able to purchase alcohol, and become an ADULT planet. kat82: Well, I guess it's more difficult for some people to get used to the idea that our solar system has 8 planets. In my mind there are always 9 planets, and it sounds weird. (I don't want to hurt Pluto lol) duncan124: It does n,t take a very good picture. No one shows a good image of it.If it was a planet then unless its changed its path has n,t it still got to be one? Was n,t it the planet for followers or for people who wanted followers? Perhaps Pluto and 'Charon' are just bits of stuff sticking together and one bump might turn them , or the others with them into asteroids heading for Earth EdDantes: In all fairness, they should have downgraded Mercury as well as Pluto, it's nothing more than a very large scorched rock thats close to the sun... that dosn't seem "planet" like to me. Some of the moons of Saturn and Jupiter have geologic activity and atmospheres, maybe they should have been upgraded to planets. My answer would have to be Jupiter. "ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS EXCEPT EUROPA. ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE." duncan124: "Was n,t it the planet for followers or for people who wanted followers?" I thought I read had that somewhere in a poem. | Science Chat Room 1 Person Chatting Similar Conversations |
