Are atheists converting into nothing but Jesus bashing mob? (Page 4)

Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin: It's not just the religious side that gets mocked, called names and "poked" at. If I repeated some of the things religious people have said, done and would do to me simply because I'm an atheist, I'm sure it would make you sick. I'm constantly told that I'm not REALLY an atheist, it's just that I don't want to be accountable for my own actions, so I lie about the existence of God in order to justify doing whatever I want to do. (how insane is that?!) I've been told by multiple Christians that they would be "laughing in heaven watching me burn", and for what? For not agreeing with them! Many folks are going to be rude and even hateful regardless of what label they wear.

As far as the Bible and the metaphor problem... I'm not saying that it's not possible for these things to have been written in metaphors....But it really loses it's ability to serve as any sort of evidence the second you say much of it is metaphorical.

Imagine there was a homeless man down the street uttering nonsense. "there's a gnome in that trash can!", he might say....You could easily go over, open the trash can and see there are no gnomes in there....Just a big ugly rat. The homeless man was wrong, period. UNTIL somebody tells you "gnome" is a metaphor for "rat"...If that's the case, the man is no longer wrong. In fact, he's right. There was a metaphorical gnome in the can! Absolutely no claim, no matter how ludicrous, can't be explained in a way to make it "correct" if you appeal to metaphors.

To appeal to metaphors every time there seems to be a problem with the Bible and also claim that the Bible is infallible is really not saying much at all. EVERYTHING is infallible if you appeal to metaphors every time there's a problem.

But in any case, I like discussing things with you Sprocket. Your interest in these topics and willingness to think them out, accept mistakes and revise your thinking is extremely commendable..especially for your age.. I'm regularly doing the same when I discuss these things with people. I'm sorry to see that somebody in this thread decided to make things insulting, but you're not alone there....we all have to deal with that.

True Charles... and I also have to own I am not being picked on or bullied or anything. I am pretty confident and actually have to be careful not to pick on others. Not suggesting I am better than anyone or know more than thers. Yet, I do need to make sure I do not get too harsh. Sarcasm and poking fun is cultural and I have lots of brothers. My point is duece is fine and I understand his frustration when others reject something that is obvious to us. We all get that, heck I used to have to drive people crazy when I rejected scientific principles based on disliking how they were used to defend view points I did not undrstand. Trying to say, I am growing and learning. Plus, I have personally seen religious people be really really rude to you.

Good solid point about the metaphor concept. One could claim Greek Mythology true if the stipulation is it being a metaphor. Or as you said the dillusions of the mentally ill.

Tomacco: “Our belief is not a belief. Our principles are not a faith. We do not rely soley upon science and reason, because these are necessary rather than sufficient factors, but we distrust anything that contradicts science or outrages reason. We may differ on many things, but what we respect is free inquiry, openmindedness, and the pursuit of ideas for their own sake.”

ghostgeek: Well Laura, it seems the atheists are in a win win situation. No time wasted praying to a non-existent God but if they call it wrong they get to sneak into heaven via the back door. It makes atheism the only logical choice.

Here is something to just ponder. Where did energy come from? There is energy in the Universe. It is neither created or lost according to science it is only transfered. But where did it come from? Obviously it did not have to come from a diety... I am just wondering other theories or concepts.

ghostgeek: I believe there are some fancy scientific theories that purport to explain such matters Sprocket Girl, revolving around Quantum Mechanics, but they never seem to live up to the billing. Otherwise, it's back to a good old deity to do the trick.

In fairness... I do not think it confirms a diety in any way. I also think that it is possible we have some science correct on Earth but maybe becomes faulsifable in the Universe. Or possibly we just will never know some things we are trying to understand or figure out.

actually it is kinda the age old diety reasoning... (which is not good)
if something like lightening can not be explaine Zues did it..
If the source of energy can not be axplained God did it..
now I feel dumb for even bringing it up....

ghostgeek: Sprocket Girl, the question you raised about the origin of energy is just one aspect of the ongoing debate between religion and science over the cause of everything. It's easy to ask the questions but experience has shown that finding answers is extremely difficult.

GeraldtheGnome: The Day there is evidence that Jesus does exist is the only time when there might be even a chance that there is a Jesus bashing Mob, since that hasn't 'come to light' so far it is doubtful that there ever was or is or ever will be a Jesus bashing Mob.

GeraldtheGnome: The thing with many of the more extreme Religious People is that they instantly think that all that they assume is correct, just like what Laura mentioned, I mean she most likely is a lovely Person, but when it comes to Religious matters she thinks that all she thinks about is certain even though there is no evidence available. What's with the lack of spaces and so on still though ?

They are NOT interested in hearing other people, just the same old mental tape loops. their own sense of self. While in \the room, did i get distrubed and act up, sure i did. Athesits, most, and chrisitans and other religions need eacother to debate. I watched all this. I tried to not get emotionally involved but called it out. TO me, there is no true god in either. ITS EGO. Funny i found this thread. Thaks.
