Talent_M: Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 17 :: Hadith 146
Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet Mohammed (SAAW) said, "The Hour (Last Day) will not be established until (religious) knowledge will be taken away (by the death of religious learned men), earthquakes will be very frequent, time will pass quickly, afflictions will appear, murders will increase and money will overflow amongst you."

Koko_Krunch: Couldnt Allah the almighty, the omnipresent, the all-knowing be a little more precise when predicting the last day?

The claim that the number and intensity of earthquakes are "on the rise" is directly disputed by the USGS (United States Geological Survey). From the USGS website

'We continue to be asked by many people throughout the world if earthquakes are on the increase. Although it may seem that we are having more earthquakes, earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater have remained fairly constant.

A partial explanation may lie in the fact that in the last twenty years, we have definitely had an increase in the number of earthquakes we have been able to locate each year. This is because of the tremendous increase in the number of seismograph stations in the world and the many improvements in global communications. In 1931, there were about 350 stations operating in the world; today, there are more than 8,000 stations and the data now comes in rapidly from these stations by electronic mail, internet and satellite. This increase in the number of stations and the more timely receipt of data has allowed us and other seismological centers to locate earthquakes more rapidly and to locate many small earthquakes which were undetected in earlier years. The NEIC now locates about 20,000 earthquakes each year or approximately 50 per day. Also, because of the improvements in communications and the increased interest in the environment and natural disasters, the public now learns about more earthquakes.

According to long-term records (since about 1900), we expect about 17 major earthquakes (7.0 - 7.9) and one great earthquake (8.0 or above) in any given year.'

Earthquakes are not becoming more frequent. Earthquakes are not becoming more intense. There is 110 years of data from the United States Geological Survey which shows that there is no increase in the size or number of earthquakes.

Point5andahalf: Yes, Jesus said the same thing and more, in Matthew 24.
And considering the population growth, these things (war, famine, natural disasters and disease), are bound to affect more people as time goes by.
It is obvious the human world is at a crisis (or soon will be). Perhaps those prophets had insight after all.

Point5andahalf: I'm not counting the times it's been said, nor am I waiting for a particular time on the calender.
But I'm realistic enough to know that the world population cannot continue indefinitely, and human consumerism is running out of recources while continually encroaching on, and disturbing, the natural ecosystem.

Yeah, the prophets have warned about it in the past, but the people can't stop themselves. So it will eventually come to be, regardless of what the prophets said.
Simple mathematics isn't it? Available resources divided by consumers.
The population has to become sustainable.
The experts say 9 billion people by 2050. I'm not so sure it'll reach that number.
We'll see in the next 40 years.

Point5andahalf: DON'T PANIC
That's what Jesus said in Matt 24,-
Jesus told them, “Don’t let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah.’ They will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but DON'T PANIC [my emphasis]. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately ..."

mindlessly: here's a question for you all .. can you exist with out nature does existence exist with out nature . so for me existence and nature is the bibical perfected marriage it speaks about .and their first born who would be our creator tells us were his amusing experiment . and perhaps nature isn't too amused with the gross negilence of us . and existence is angry we keep thinking heaven is our natural home sweet home and were neglecting our birth place .

Point5andahalf: @Talent M,
I'm interested in what Islam teaches about the last days. As you say, to see how much sense it makes.
I think it is similar to what the Christian bible says, old testament and new testament.

I believe the last days is referring to the end of human greed and our competetive, consumer driven societies. Not the end of the World.
We need a change from within ouselves, not from the governments.
And that was Jesus's message - a change from within, not to rely on a Leader to control us and change things for us.

No, I don't take it all literally, but I take an interest in current events.

Really, it's just history repeating itself. How many civilizations have gone without a trace, except for archaeological discoveries?

I think, we are at another crisis as has happened before to other civilizations in the past.

Point5andahalf: I only said 'I think'. I could be wrong. That's why I'm asking Talent.

"We" means humanity since the beginning of human society, and civilizations means all of those various civilizations that have risen and dissappeared or been overtaken, and the history lost.

I know you want to believe Sits, but I'm not trying to convince ya.
