Zanjan: Vap, I knew about the Klan before you were born - I was the kind of kid who liked to read encyclopedias and watch the news, particular news in other countries. Their horrid reputation is well known.

More than 30 years ago, a few white supremacists managed to escape north across the border to Western Canada but we didn't like them at all. We told them to go home but they refused, calling themselves refugees. So, we let them stay - they went to a small town in the middle of nowhere on the prairies and got themselves a well- treed compound (so nobody could see in), telling the media they just wanted to be left alone.

Zanjan: To be fair, language has its limitations; we still use words from the old order due to old order mentality remaining in society. While Blacks like to distinguish themselves by that name, I don't like any reference to colour of skin - it's what the world demands right now when speaking of a particular cultural group.

Today, many Blacks don't belong to that cultural group; the term 'Afro-American" is better but still somewhat out of order with the reality when they're not new immigrants/refugees. When they are, they're identified by their country of origin.

Dark-skinned people have been here as long as our country has; these are all so well integrated in Canadian society we normally don't have to use any descriptive in conversation. More and more, I'm seeing long-timers refer to themselves as "mixed race", or by continental terms, such as "Asians".

The word "race" will be with us permanently, however, that usage (as pertaining to outward appearance) will soon enough find its place with other archaic forms.

A word about "hats": In the old world, people used them to define who they were - the taller the hat, the more authority you held in your society. This is no more.

These last 2 weeks have lead me to the Amish country of mid Pennslyvania. Not by design but a community of self segregated Whites. Needless to say , I was very impressed.
