deuce916: Ha. It's strange isn't it? Everybody thinks they know the truth. Even I think I know the truth. But there is only one truth. I bet you can't think of what it is? What do you think the truth is?

Airstream: Assegayer, the reason why there are so many religions is that some people have always disputed the "established" way to worship God (or a multitude of different gods). Religions split all the time as a result of such inability to agree upon one version or liturgy.

If one religion is the truth, then it cannot be Islam, since it is a latecomer among them and people had practiced other faiths for at least 5000 years before Muhammad.

And regarding creation, no matter how awesome a human being or anything else may seem, this is no evidence for anything else than a natural development without the need for an intelligent design, any which way you try to twist it.

Airstream: To stretch this kind of logic almost beyond its breaking point, this will ultimately imply that I can scribble whatever I want on a roll of toilet paper and present it as written evidence of a universal truth that has all rights to suppress previous religions, because I have had a revelation from God telling me that everything hitherto assumed has been incomplete and distorted by men.

Magicspell
Magicspell: This old trick has been tried every time a new religion saw the light of day, with a varying degree of success. Which authority has the right to declare the older faiths null and void in such situations? The leaders of the new direction? Come on, folks! As long as no deity has the guts to step forward and reveal itself, it's up to every preacher to convince people that he has communicated with the most powerful of the geezers upstairs and thereby obtained a god-given right to proclaim the one and only truth.

It's the winner's market and the loser will end up in the winner's hell every time. Isn't it strange how something as seemingly peaceful as a religious faith becomes the manifestation of destructive forces as soon as it is put to the test and challenged? I have never been able to understand this paradox and I would be grateful if someone could explain it to me in a rational and coherent way.

orkanen: adamleath27: As complex Civilizations arose, education became a necessity, but religion was not the driving force. Seek for Chinese, Egyptian, Greek and Roman educational models. The Christian school in the Middle Ages was crude version of the Roman model, which again was a crude version of the Greek schooling model.

Education around the Mediterranean was to prepare children for adult life, and included all available sciences and gymnastics. Christian education included reading and writing, simple maths and singing, ensured the preservation of Religious Scripture, replacement clergy and and a place in the hereafter.

orkanen: The Middle East already had advanced civilizations come and go prior to Islam, so I don't know why you bring up Muslims. I don't know anything about education along the Swahili coast, nor India, maybe you can enlighten me?

What I mean by Education is a manner of organized education, done by someone who's primary task in society is teaching, where some of the skills taught are reading and writing, as opposed to home schooling where sons learn the trades of the fathers.
