Captain Canada: Well Crimea has been under several controlled empires over several centuries, being the latest USSR,in 1991 with the fall of ""The Wall ""Ukraine became a separate country.
The Autonomous Republic of Crimea is an autonomous parliamentary republic within Ukraine and is governed by the Constitution of Crimea in accordance with the laws of Ukraine. So technically if residents of Crimea want to vote to belong to Russia or Ukraine or became a independent state they can,but of courses the western leaders already said that it would not recognize such vote /referendum
From what i understand the WILL and WISHES of the people of Crimea under a DEMOCRATIC vote to decide their future, will not be recognized by USA,Canada.
So much for calling Canada and USA democratic nation.

chronology
chronology: Guys, as Americans say 'lets talk Turkey'. Ukraine has potentially vast economic wealth in the energy and food supply markets. At the moment we have Cartels from Russia, the U.S. Europe and small time players from other places engaging in a kind of 'Beauty Pageant' in Ukraine to win the control of the of these huge resources, we also have some violence at times as people scuffle for dominance of contracts and legislators.

People can spin romantic history stories about Crimea's past, or what they claim is Ukraine's real friends in politics today. The best advice people in Crimea could follow is to avoid extremists and try to negotiate the best deal their Law Makers can with these Global Cartels. The safety of minorities like the Jewish community also needs to be assured, folks in Western Europe are sensitive to the history of genocide Jewish people suffered in Ukraine in the WW2 era. Jewish folks today should not even have to remind people of their past trauma in that country.

All that said; best of luck to the folks in Ukraine, and remember that other old American saying 'if a deal someone is offering you looks too good to be true, it usually is'.

Crimea – another artificially created crisis

rt.com-------------
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that the Ukraine/Crimea crisis has been “created artificially for purely geopolitical reasons." And he’s right.

lavendar_star: I don’t know with this one according to the West the referendum in Crimea( which got 97% pro Russia votes) is wrong but when the UK does one with Falklands its right. I do think we are a bunch of hypocrites in the West. I am no fan of Putin and if he starts with Crimea will he move onto other ex USSR countries. But they did kick out a democratic leader in the Ukraine as bad as he was he was no Mugabe (and we don’t care about that!!! and we seem yet again (Libya, Egypt) ignoring the far right elements in this new government. Its same old all about resources and who gets them.

Internet reports President Putin as signing an agreement making Crimea a part of Russia.

And that the RT news You tube channel was blocked for a while.

It seems that is going to be the way forward for the Internet. Corrupt and misleading web pages will have to be stopped.

Wireclubs belated attempts to stop abusive threads in the forums was not the answer and WC will have to face the future knowing that it is likely to be stopped, along with You Tube and Google.

Captain Canada: OIL you say Elisabeth.Hardly
The West is protecting the Cheburek a traditional Crimean dish from those barbaric Russians,Its a turnover made of flour with no yeast, fried in sunflower oil. Usually it is filled with ground meat (lamb or beef), spices and sometimes with tomatoes. Also you can find vegetarian chebureki with cheese. Yantik is a cheburek that is grilled, not fried.
