Metaverseguy: 10 billion is too many as it is. High density metropolitan towns have more people than can be imagined. Millions of people in such small regions makes it difficult for relationships and makes people less empathetic towards others. The traffic is always very high and there is such a huge conglomeration of people that there could be hundreds of different languages and communities and cultures all melded together in one giant supercity, which is the case for quite a few. It would be nice if this Mars thing works out and we could send a few hundred million over there. Maybe even a million on the moon would be good if the weight and mass of the moon didn't increase so much that it came crashing into the Earth.

DawnGurl: I live and work in New York City and am very happy here. We do not suffer from the calamaties described by Python although the media would love nothing more than if everyone thought so. We have a very diverse population here and it ADDS to our humanity and empthy. It does NOT detract from it. Relationships are easier since you are not confined to a narrow range of options as such would be the case in a small town. Python describes millions of people living together as a "conglomeration," as if we were a blob of mud and stones thrown together. I prefer to say we are a huge and harmonious community of different peoples living together relatively peacefully. If the rest of the planet would follow our example, this would be a MUCH better planet.

If you guys were worried about the NSA spying about you, how'd you like all your neighbors knowing every single little detail like they were attached to your hip.

DEEP_acheleg: rich and poor is inconsequential, the question is , do you have access to food water and shelter, or not? in the country, you can grow and hunt, and land is cheap to obtain, trees assessable to build shelter, and most everywhere can be found groundwater in wells- if made deep enough.. most of africas problems are partially due to the environmental changes, and largely caused by the fight for political power, and the people, manipulated and used as pawns in a game of thrones.

Pragmatic Aristocrat: This is how it works. We have a lot of food we are not eating and the stores throw away. The store estimate how much food people are going to buy and put it on the shelves. If for some reason this estimate is wrong they toss out the old good or send it to places like the 99 cent store which usually get the extra they did not sell or the store said it had too much of. So places like dollar tree and the 99 cents stores sell some of it but whatever is not sold in time is tossed in the garbage. Whatever is not sold by sell by date at regular stores like Stater brothers is often tossed. We dont have enough food for people but that is because half the food we get we are throwing away. That is the price of mass production.

I believe you are correct to a point. Food that spoils is a small percentage of what grocery stores purchase. Yes, some food goes 'out of date' and this food usually makes it to shelters, food banks and such. Some of the food a grocery store purchases is fresh and it does wither and spoil. I am positive store management keeps this to a minimum since their 'bonus' is partially based on this sensitive subject. In the past, stores used to donate to the local zoo but that has since stopped since the animals are insured for millions, they do not eat 'out of date' or 'potentially spoiled' foods.

The mom and pop farmers of the world are throwing in the towel. They have been for years. That type of subsistence farming for the family farmer and 'roadside vegetable fruit and vegetable stands' are long gone in feeding the masses. It was fine when the world had 1/3 the population but now, humans (7+ Billion) are draining current food and water resources and the only entities that can handle large quantities of growing are large companies. The US is blessed with large amounts of food, but lately, food supplies are shaky. For example, the price of eggs went from 17.2 cents per egg to 25.5 cents per egg...overnight. This they say is due to the bird flu (whether this is correct or not...who knows). On the other side of the spectrum...current pork prices have dropped significantly with pork of all types flooding the market with cheap pricing.

Fresh water has become and issue in the west where most of the US produce is grown. California is almost a desert right now with rationing in place and more rationing to come unless rain returns...quickly.

Pragmatic Aristocrat: @Ghostgeek we make too much food and a lot of it goes to waste. Why the US has too much food and there is 3rd world countries dont have enough. Think about how fast food companys work. You pay 5$ for a meal right but now all the meals are supersized so let say you get 30% extra food. Now not everyone is going to eat the 30 extra percent they will throw that 30 percent away. However if they only eat that at the one time we just throw away the 30 percent they could have eaten later but we are giving them too much food at one time. Not portioning out so people can eat a reasonable amount at several times.

Well....

Fast Facts

Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2009–2010 2, 3

More than 2 in 3 adults are considered to be overweight or obese.

More than 1 in 3 adults are considered to be obese.

More than 1 in 20 adults are considered to have extreme obesity.

About one-third of children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are considered to be overweight or obese.

More than 1 in 6 children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are considered to be obese.

http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/health-statistics/Pages/overweight-obesity-statistics.aspx

Things are alright according to fortran because the population is obese. So, I guess with that logic, Americans should stay fat and everything will continue to be fine.

Seriously folks, one thing has nothing to do with the other.

Obesity is due to overindulgence in flour, sugar and soda pop. Not enough people eat 'fresh food'. Mostly people eat stuff out of boxes, plastic bags, frozen food, stuff from the 'bakery section' and crap from the deli. Inexpensive to make...crap food and we havn't even mentioned 'fast food' like McD's or Burger King or the others.

I am a recovering food-a-holic. I weighed in again 105 pounds less than I did a year ago this morning. I've dropped 15 inches from my waist. I still do not eat anything made out of flour, cane or beet sugar, corn syrup, or any type of soda pop. Since I started this process over a year ago, my food bill has gone up 48%. Sugar and flour are cheep ingredients and used extensively in producing food. The more that is used, the less the product costs which raises profit.

I haven't had donuts, pasta, bread, tortilla's, pizza in over a year now. Ok...I did treat myself to a Subway sand but no cheese and no mayo. I also cut dairy completely out except for non-fat milk for my coffee. I use Stivia as the substitute for sweet taste.

Am I scared that I might gain the weight back? Absolutely. I have a daily ritual. I look in the mirror and say, "I choose not to eat flour, sugar or drink soda pop today and tomorrow." I used this process to stop smoking too. I choose not to smoke today or tomorrow. I am addicted to nicotine and will be for the rest of my life. I have stopped ingesting nicotine and that was the hardest thing I have ever done. So, choosing not to eat flour, sugar or drink soda pop was much easier...but more expensive.

Sorry for the rambling however the topic is about overpopulation which being obese or not is part of the conversation.

Fresh water is a huge topic in my area of the country and farmers are having issues securing water to grow food. California, the countries #1 agricultural center is starving from lack of fresh water. Hundreds if not thousands of acres of land are not planted because of the lack of water. Jobs have disappeared as well.

Imagine....and this is a ultra rich food growing country. In California, even bottled water manufacturing facilities are being demonized for 'selling' water. Imagine that. When will farmers become demonized for growing food and then 'selling' it?

Metaverseguy: Overpopulation is just determined when basic needs aren't met like there's not enough food on the planet to feed the entire population. This is actually been measured in the 1800's pretty well since population grows exponentially while food grows linearly. I've seen people today still refer to that model, but the problem is it doesn't take into consideration modern farming techniques and tools which make growing and collecting food much easier. For instance, the average family can live for a decade on the bread grown from only 1 acre of wheat.

Of course, this doesn't take into account that people want more than just food for what they consider adequate living. They want access to clean water, plumbing, safe community, nice house, car, good paying job. A lot of areas have more people than available houses. Most adult wants to live in their own house or apartment not share a room like they are some little kid. I think best way to deal with this would be if adopting children would become more popular. Orphans are probably at greater risk to be dependent on the system anyways. If more people adopted than had their own kid it might improve things. Everyone is 99.99% the same as far as DNA is concerned anyways.
