AU troops retake Somali UN base - 22 dead
2013-06-19 20:07

Mogadishu - Islamist militants carried out a deadly assault on the main UN compound in the Somali capital on Wednesday, dealing a blow to fragile security gains that have allowed a slow return of foreign aid workers and diplomats.

The assault, claimed by Islamist group al-Shabaab, began before midday when a car bomb exploded outside the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) base. Rebel gunmen forced their way into the compound and fought with security guards.

The African Union (AU) peacekeeping force, which sent soldiers and armoured vehicles to the compound, which includes several buildings, said it was under the control of friendly troops after a gun fight that lasted more than 90 minutes.

Interior Minister Abdikarim Hussein Guled said four foreign UN security staff and four local guards were killed in the gun battle that left seven insurgent fighters dead.

An ambulance service official said his crew carried away seven dead civilians, bringing the total dead to 22.

It was the first significant attack on UN premises by al-Shabaab since they were driven out of Mogadishu in fighting with AU and Somali government forces about two years ago.

More than a million Somalis live in crisis conditions, according to the United Nations, which has started building up offices and international staff after security improved.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he was "outraged by the despicable attack" in a telephone call to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Al Shabaab accused the United Nations of serving U.S. interests.

"The UN, a merchant of death and a satanic force of evil, has a long, inglorious record of spreading nothing but poverty, dependency and disbelief," al-Shabaab said on its Twitter feed @HSMPRESS1.

The South African state weapons firm Denel said two of its staff were killed in the raid. Militants have launched grenade strikes and similar low-level attacks on UN bases in the past, but no assault of this scale.

One UN official said some Western nations that had been keen to support the Western-leaning government elected last year had played down dangers posed by al-Shabaab and its ability to infiltrate the security forces and attack the capital.

"This is part of the consequence of over-optimism in some Western nations that has overshadowed the need to look at deeper problems before rolling out any kind of UN mission," said the official, who follows Somalia closely but is not authorised to talk to the media.

He said the government had not done enough to overhaul its security forces.

The top UN official in Somalia, Nicholas Kay, told Reuters there were lessons to be learned but that the United Nations would not be deterred from its mission.

Asked if UN staff would be evacuated from Mogadishu, Kay said: "No. The UN is here to help and we are here to stay."

The initial bomb blast sprayed masonry and twisted metal across the road that links the nearby airport, which serves as the main base for the AU peacekeepers, and the city centre.

The Somali government condemned the attack and offered "deepest sympathy to all victims".

"Today all Somalia stands shoulder to shoulder with Unsom," Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon Saaid said on Twitter, referring to the new UN Somalia assistance programme Unsom.

Bystanders reported several smaller blasts inside the compound during the gunfight.

AU forces and government troops drove al-Shabaab rebels out of the coastal capital in 2011, but militants have kept up guerrilla-style attacks from rural bases.

The overthrow of a dictator in 1991 plunged Somalia into two decades of violent turmoil, first at the hands of clan warlords and then Islamist militants, who have steadily lost ground since 2011 under pressure from the AU military offensive.

@ Harlett - who suggested that you are picking on Africa? You must see the murder in Nigeria! Muslim raiders are killing and attacking christian villages all over. Other countries in Africa are also suffering badly. It never ends.

In SA we have PAGAD. What started out as pure vigilantism...

PAGAD was originally initiated by a handful of neighbourhood watch members from a few coloured Cape Town townships who decided to organize public demonstrations to pressure the government to fight the illegal drug trade and gangsterism more effectively. However, PAGAD increasingly took matters into their own hands, believing the police were not taking enough action against gangs. Initially the community and police were hesitant to act against PAGAD activities, recognising the need for community action against crime in the gang-ridden communities of the Cape Flats.

Notorious gangsters were initially asked by PAGAD members to stop their criminal activities or be subject to 'popular justice'. A common PAGAD modus operandi was to set fire to drug dealers houses and kill gangsters. PAGAD's campaign came to prominence in 1996 when a local gang leader, Rashaad Staggie, was beaten and burnt to death by a mob during a march to his home in Salt River. South Africa's police quickly came to regard PAGAD as part of the problem when it was discovered that PAGAT was selling drugs, rather than a partner in the fight against crime and they were eventually designated a terrorist organization by the South African government.

The threat of growing vigilantism in 2000 led the Western Cape provincial government to declare a 'war on gangs' that became a key priority of the ANC provincial government at the time.

Cape Town bombings

Although PAGAD's leadership denied involvement, PAGAD's G-Force, operating in small cells, was believed responsible for killing a large number of gang leaders, and also for a bout of urban terrorism — particularly bombings — in Cape Town. The bombings started in 1998, and included nine bombings in 2000. In addition to targeting gang leaders, bombing targets included South African authorities, moderate Muslims, synagogues, gay nightclubs, tourist attractions, and Western-associated restaurants. The most prominent attack during this time was the bombing on 25 August 1998 of the Cape Town Planet Hollywood.

In September 2000, magistrate Pieter Theron, who was presiding in a case involving PAGAD members, was murdered in a drive-by shooting.

PAGAD's leaders have become known for making anti-semitic statements. A 1997 incendiary bomb attack on a Jewish bookshop owner was found by police to have been committed with the same material PAGAD has used in other attacks. In 1998, Ebrahim Moosa, a University of Cape Town academic who had been critical of PAGAD, decided to take a post in the United States after his home was bombed.

Violent acts such as bombings and vigilantism in Cape Town subsided in 2002, and the police have not attributed any such acts to PAGAD since the November 2002 bombing of the Bishop Lavis offices of the Serious Crimes Unit in the Western Cape. In 2002, PAGAD leader Abdus Salaam Ebrahim was convicted of public violence and imprisoned for seven years. Although a number of other PAGAD members were arrested and convicted of related crimes, none were convicted of the Cape Town bombings.

Today, PAGAD maintains a small and less visible presence in the Cape Town Muslim community.

Sometimes I wish that some members on wireclub who think that they know Africa and its politics can be dropped off in Africa to experience the real world which I have been born into.

I love Africa and are bound to this land by the blood of many.

I digress, can we still separate politics and religion? I look at what is happening in Europe with muslims screeching for British policemens' heads and condemning writers to death in absentia. I see muslims condemning free newspapers for publishing cartoons of muhamed as he really should be portrayed and my throat closes up.

One religion in the world is forcing their fanaticism unto every government - Islam. The catholic church tried it and succeeded in the past but they did not, as far as I know, send suicide bombers in aircraft in to murder innocents, blow up offices of the United Nations, etc.

Japan has a very good policy, look it up! More should be so brave.

Taliban kill 10 foreign climbers, Pakistani guide
2013-06-24 09:13

Islamabad — Islamic militants disguised as policemen killed 10 foreign climbers and a Pakistani guide in a brazen overnight raid against their campsite at the base of one of the world's tallest mountains in northern Pakistan, officials said.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed it carried out the attack at Nanga Parbat to avenge the death of their deputy leader in a U.S. drone strike last month.

The area has largely been peaceful, hundreds of kilometers from the Taliban's major sanctuaries along the Afghan border. But the militant group, which has been waging a bloody insurgency against the government for years, has shown it has the ability to strike almost anywhere in the country.

The Taliban began their attack by abducting two local guides to take them to the remote base camp in Gilgit-Baltisan, said Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan. One guide was killed, and the other has been detained for questioning. The attackers disguised themselves by wearing uniforms used by the Gilgit Scounts, a paramilitary force that patrols the area, Khan said.

Around 15 gunmen attacked the camp at around 11 pm Saturday, said the Alpine Club of Pakistan, which spoke with the surviving guide, Sawal Faqir. They began by beating the mountaineers and taking away any mobile and satellite phones they could find, as well as everyone's money, said the club in a statement.

Some climbers and guides were able to run away, but those that weren't were shot dead, said the club. Faqir was able to hide a satellite phone and eventually used it to notify authorities of the attack.

Attaur Rehman, the home secretary in Gilgit-Baltistan, said 10 foreigners and one Pakistani were killed in the attack. The dead foreigners included three Ukrainians, two Slovakians, two Chinese, one Lithuanian, one Nepalese and one Chinese-American, according to Rehman and tour operators who were working with the climbers. Matt Boland, the acting spokesperson at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, confirmed that an American citizen was among the dead, but could not say whether it was a dual Chinese national.

The shooting — one of the worst attacks on foreigners in Pakistan in recent years — occurred in a stunning part of the country that has seen little violence against tourists, although it has experienced attacks by radical Sunni Muslims on minority Shiites in recent years.

Pakistani Taliban spokesperson Ahsanullah Ahsan claimed responsibility for the attack, saying their Jundul Hafsa faction carried out the shooting as retaliation for the death of the Taliban's deputy leader, Waliur Rehman, in a U.S. drone attack on May 29.

"By killing foreigners, we wanted to give a message to the world to play their role in bringing an end to the drone attacks," Ahsan told The Associated Press by telephone from an undisclosed location.

The U.S. insists the CIA strikes primarily kill al-Qaida and other militants who threaten the West as well as efforts to stabilize neighboring Afghanistan. In a recent speech, President Barack Obama outlined tighter restrictions on the highly secretive program.

the real slim DEEPy
the real slim DEEPy: i would say that there are diferrent renditions of islam within each islamic country. the knran states that there ais to be "no division in islam", which means that a muslim of one sect must deny any diferrent sect of being muslim- as admitting to muslim sects violates the koran. hence, those muslims of peaceful areas see the militant muslims of other sects as "not muslim", and that is why so many musims deny that there is muslim militance- they are forbidden by the koran to consider any sects as muslim, thus the peaceful sects see violent sects as NOT MUSLIM.

truthfully, our media is quite biased towards israili zoinism, due to george soros abillty to bribe execs from viurtually every us news source to portray muslims as agressors, in order to hide that it takes 2 to tango.

the best soulce o what goes ion in islamic nations is to talk to christian refugees from musilm countries. egypt has maintained peace for many years with israel, however, i have some friends who are coptic egyptian christian refugees. they claim that musilms often enter christian temples firing automatic rifles or throwing grenates, and the army refuses to get involved, thus, not offerring them equal protection, but, not by policy, but by apathetic military officers.

if a country is run by sharia, often, only muslims are protected fully, and some protections do not apply to non-muslims,; however, this is not always the case, and, many periods of history, between crusades, sew peacefup coinhabitance wuthin israel/palestine.

additionally, the us's alledged alliance with israel, our creating and destroying of usama ben laden and saddam heussain, and subsequent occupations of afghanistan and iraq, our involvements in the lybian and egyptian revolutions, an listing iran and syrias as an "axis of evil". are all very good reasons for muslims to have ill feelings towards the west. muslim militance is often a reaction to percieved and real infringements from non-muslim nations.

the one thing that does get me is the expectations of muslims to submit those of other religions to muslim law. folowing muslim law will only make you a good muslim IF you ARE a muslim. if an infidel "sins", so what, hes going to hell, sins or not...

however, counter that with the claimed US goal of "spreading dempocrocy".; we are trying to force them to adopt our laws, the same as they try to hold us to their laws.

If I go to another country, I will respect its laws and culture. I will not force my religious views, culture or language upon others. Westeners going into muslim countries must abide by their laws. Muslims moving into Britan, Europe and the US are creating such trouble by refusing to conform and imposing their religion, etc, etc on others. If you are unhappy with the country, fuck off back to your own and shut up.

I think this explains it best.

THE MUSLIMS ARE NOT HAPPY!

They're not happy in Gaza ..
They're not happy in Egypt ..
They're not happy in Libya ..

Not Islam.
Not their leadership.
Not themselves.

THEY BLAME THE COUNTRIES THEY ARE HAPPY IN!

AND THEN; They want to change those countries to be like....
THE COUNTRY THEY CAME FROM WHERE THEY WERE UNHAPPY!

I NEVER KNEW THIS ABOUT JAPAN
The Japanese are a very evolved race.

Have you ever read in the newspaper that a political leader or a prime minister from an Islamic nation has visited Japan? Have you ever come across news that the Ayatollah of Iran or the King of Saudi Arabia or even a Saudi Prince has visited Japan?

Japan is a country keeping Islam at bay. Japan has put strict restrictions on Islam and ALL Muslims.

The reasons are:

a) Japan is the only nation that does not give citizenship to Muslims.
b) In Japan permanent residency is not given to Muslims.
c) There is a strong ban on the propagation of Islam in Japan.
d) In the University of Japan, Arabic or any Islamic language is not taught.
e) One cannot import a 'Koran' published in the Arabic language.
f) According to data published by the Japanese government, it has given temporary residency to only 2 lakhs, Muslims, who must follow the Japanese Law of the Land. These Muslims should speak Japanese and carry their religious rituals in their homes.
g) Japan is the only country in the world that has a negligible number of embassies in Islamic countries.
h) Japanese people are not attracted to Islam at all.
I) Muslims residing in Japan are the employees of foreign companies.
j) Even today, visas are not granted to Muslim doctors, engineers or managers sent by foreign companies.
k) In the majority of companies it is stated in their regulations that no Muslims should apply for a job.
l) The Japanese government is of the opinion that Muslims are fundamentalist and even in the era of globalization they are not willing to change their Muslim laws.
m) Muslims cannot even think about renting a house in Japan.
n) If anyone comes to know that his neighbor is a Muslim then the whole neighbourhood stays alert.
o) No one can start an Islamic cell or Arabic 'Madrasa' in Japan
p) There is no Sharia law in Japan.
q) If a Japanese woman marries a Muslim then she is considered an outcast forever.
r) According to Mr. Kumiko Yagi, Professor of Arab/Islamic Studies at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, "There is a mind frame in Japan that Islam is a very narrow minded religion and one should stay away from it."
s) Freelance journalist Mohammed Juber toured many Islamic countries after 9/11 including Japan. He found that the Japanese were confident that extremists could do no harm in Japan.
