davesdatahut: We are getting off the point of whether legalizing drugs would reduce gun violence (my view is that this is a no-brainer). But I still have not seen any evidence that legalizing booze increased domestic violence or any other crime. In fact, it reduced crime, by taking the business away from organized criminal enterprises, just as legalizing other drugs would do.
Conservatives or libertarians, or anyone who is concerned about the power of government, should embrace the idea of drug legalization because it gets the government OUT of people's personal lives. No?
Harlett, by your reasoning, we should make booze illegal. Do you advocate that?

davesdatahut: Harlett, I'm not sure I follow your reasoning here. Do I gather you favor keeping drugs illegal, to keep the drug dealers dealing drugs as opposed to looking for legitimate jobs? Or do you think these dealers will now go out and break into people's homes to support themselves?
Is is just one terrible option versus another?
Can you flesh that reasoning out a bit?
When booze was legalized, did the booze dealers then turn to burglarizing homes?

davesdatahut: Harlett, I'm still wondering why you think the government should tell people what to do to their own bodies, and why crime would increase if drugs were legal. Where is the support for this? Or is this just your presumption?
As for surveillance cameras, I believe (correct me if I am wrong), they have helped law enforcement catch criminals. No? How have cameras led to increase crime?

davesdatahut: Ok, I just don't know what you are talking about. The freaking drugs I am talking about are all the freaking drugs that are out there. Legalize them and take the business away from violent criminals.
You haven't asked me any questions to answer, although you do seem to making a lot of presumptions about my views when you say things like 'you think folks would out of no where become responsible drug users.. because they are legal.'
I still am waiting to hear what facts you can cite to back up your contention that crime would increase if drugs were legalized.

davesdatahut: Whether more or fewer people would get into drugs if they were legal is a separate issue - one we can also get into. But to bring this back to the original question...I keep trying to figure out why you think legalizing drugs would increase crime. You cite things about people who abuse drugs and the bad things they do. Point accepted. But where is there any evidence that legalization would INCREASE their use. I challenge you to this question: do you know a single person who currently does not use illegal drugs but would start using and abusing them if they were legal? Would you? Would your friends? I wouldn't. And no one I know would, I don't think. It's just like booze. People used it before it was legal. They used it after it was legal. The difference was that crime dropped after it was legalized because it took the business away from criminals. I am going to hazard a guess that, with education on the dangers of alcohol abuse, that booze-related crime has actually DROPPED in recent years. Drunk driving has certainly gone down. There is data to prove it at fbi.gov.It would stand to reason, therefore, that other booze-related crimes have done down. But maybe you have other facts?
