Captain Canada
Captain Canada: Many moons ago the world was devastated (mostly Americans)by the Iraqi regime from killing innocent infants in some orphan nursery, the media coverage was superb ( Oscar material awards) That turned the world opinion to wipe out the dictatorship

What does Iraq have???? Oil, fucking loads of OIL.

Sir Loin: hmmm, seems that oil is the common denominator for wherever USA involves itself in other countries' politics. What other countries has USA invaded/ destabilised govts that also have oil?
Venezuela, Philippines, New Zealand, Lybia, Vietnam, Cambodia... I'm sure there's plenty more.

Venezuela...Hugo's hate fest of the west Venezuela. However, we buy boat loads of oil from them. Boatloads!!!!

Ooops....I guess we forgot to invade Venezuela. Damn!!! Pisses me off!

When we elect the next non-liberal, non-progressive, non-left ideology President...

We have enough energy in this country to last for centuries. We must become self energy dependent as soon as possible. Then there is, according to you two chaps, the US will not need to 'invade' other countries. Silly gooses.

Sir Loin: If you read my post I said invade/destabilise govts. Thats exactly what USA did to Hugo. Same as they tried to destabilise the Lange govt in NZ, labelling him a "terrorist" because he refused access to US military with nuclear weapons on board. About the same time large oil fields were discovered off the Canterbury Bight and Foveaux Strait

Have no idea what you are talking about. Hugo stole from American companies...big time...oil companies. They just a bit more powerful than the US government.

Nuclear weapons? A few more facts please so I can understand what you are suggesting.

Sir Loin: In the late 70's the NZ Prime Minister David Lange declared NZ a nuclear free state. Telling allies their ships and planes would still be welcome to visit if they neither carried nuclear weapons nor were nuclear powered. USA refused to say whether this was the case so Lange booted an aircraft carrier out of our waters. He was promptly labeled a terrorist by USA, ANZUS was dissolved and trade sanctions placed on NZ. The world Bank was bullied into downgrading NZ credit rating and recalling loans. Meanwhile the US propaganda dept ran a series of full page ads and tv campaigns denouncing Lange and scaremongering. The NZ govt was almost toppled but its citizens rallied behind him and stood up to USA. A US warship was sent to sail into Wellington harbour uninvited but had to turn back when confonted with a flotilla of civilian craft and 2 navy cruisers which would have blown it out of the water.
As for Hugo stealing from US companies. I'm not certain but I understood he nationalised parts of the Venezuelan oil industry which is in accordance with international law, many industries in many countries have been nationalised in the past. Perhaps he was sick of US companies ripping off his country, I don't know.

Some companies are "nationalized" in their "own" country. However, Hugo "nationalized" Shell Oil and Standard Oil assets. That is unabated stealing.

Here is an article that sort of supports your comments, however, some of the facts you state are not supported.

orangemoon8: Hugo, didn't nationalize Shell Oil. Shell was forced to sell it's operations in Venezuela, he took Citgo holdings here in the US and turned it into PDV and pretty much threw out all of the others. PDV in Venezuela, is like Pemex......a nationlized co. in Mexico. Esso was one of these companies, that was thrown out. Venezuela has alot of what is so-called HSC-Heavy Sour Crude, which was pretty much useless because of it's refining process. When the price went up in 2008, we started to look at HSC as an alternative. US, Canada and maybe now China can process this crude. Light Sweet Crude is being used up at a fast rate, and the price keeps on going up for it.
It's easy to get out of the ground, and easy to process. HSC and Tar Sand oil in Canada, are being used more now. The Bakken oil fields in North Dakota produce alot of oil, but it has a very high ignition rate, and dangerous to transport. We need to get this pipeline built, and tell OPEC to take a hike, which Venezuela is a part of.
Chevron is sitting on more than 28 bln bbls of oil, and possibly has more, they won't take it out until they have to, when that is who knows.

Sir Loin: I can't use that link you gave David so I have no idea where the info came from. The story I told you is from memory as I was involved in the anti nuke movement in NZ and it is as accurate as memories can be.
As I said before I don't know a hell of a lot about what led up to the dispute between dear old Hugo and the US oil companies.
I do have quite a good knowledge of how they operated in NZ as my job was an environmental scientist. Shell stands out as one company that rides roughshod over environmental issues, Exxon is another but is not involved in NZ that I know of. Another one called Anna Darko or something similar was causing a lot of trouble in NZ when I left there a few months ago. Very dodgy safety practices!

Sir Loin,

Thank you for your service to humanity as an environmental scientist. I can only assume you work with facts. Hopefully you are not a tree hugging wac job.

Sir Loin: Yes David I work with facts. Certainly my old university thought so when they conferred a PhD on me.
Actually the "tree guggers" of Greenpeace and other organisations perform a very useful task too, I have much admiration for them. One very useful achievement is to bring environmental issues to the forfront of public notice. So much so that the French government felt obliged to carry out the only act of international terrorism seen in NZ when they bombed the Greenpeace flagship, Rainbow Warrior, killing one crew member while it lay at its moorings in Auckland Harbour prior to protesting French nuclear testing at Muroroa Attol in the 1980s.
If they were "wac jobs" I hardly think this would have happened.

Sir Loin: Yup, thanks David it worked that time. Interesting article and very believable, I've experienced a few of the traffic jams here. Not nice!
Of course the problem is caused by all these goddam slaves in China driving their fucking Mercedes to and from work! Oh and a goodly selection of BMWs, Audis, Porches, and Range Rovers.
Why can't they just trudge on foot or ride rattly ancient bikes like good little slaves should? Dammit, don't they know their place?

Sir Loin: I haven't had a close look at any exhaust systems on cars here but I would guess not. There's no controls on factory emissions, coal smoke everywhere. The air here is the worst I've seen anywhere and this is my speciality.
