In other words, they have the ability to make you join if it is part of their collective bargaining agreement between the employer and the union. That means that "yes" it can and does occur. Even if you choose not to be a member, you still have to pay their union dues. Unions negotiators provide a service and that is to get more money out of the employer in the form of wages.
