shadowline: When did Palestine exist? The region was conquered by the Turks in 1517, and by Britain four hundred years later. When Britain designated the region "Palestine" in 1922 the Arabs who lived there refused to recognize that any such place existed. It was governed by Britain until 1947 when the United Nations voted to partition it. The Zionists accepted the U.N. partition plan, the Arabs (who did not call themselves "Palestinians" at the time, and were still denying that any such place existed) rejected it. For that reason, Israel came to exist, Palestine did not. There has never been a Palestine.

Jordan conquered the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1948 and occupied them until 1967. They gave the Arabs who lived in those areas Jordanian citizenship and many of them moved into Jordan itself. Israel replaced Jordan as the occupier of the West Bank and East Jerusalem (having defeated the Syrian, Jordanian, and Egyptian attempt to wipe it from the map of the world) and has occupied them ever since.

There's no Palestine in any of that. There may be, one day. But I doubt it.
