Iranian girl attacked in UK over hijab

rebel1916
rebel1916: An Iranian Muslim girl has reportedly come under attack in Britain after refusing to remove her hijab amid a new wave of Islamophobia in Western countries.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when London resident Zahra Kazemi Saleh was attacked by four young British women as she was going home from school, Tabnak reported on Thursday.

The Iranian member of the Muslim Student Council was attacked in broad daylight by the girls who did not like Zahra's refusal to take off her hijab.

Zahra sustained facial injuries in the encounter, which is not the first act of violence against a Muslim in Europe.

London's Muslim Student Council condemned the attack, and blamed the British government for supporting the spread of Islamophobic opinions in the country.

The anti-hijab campaign in Europe is not limited to the UK, where Muslims account for three million of the country's 60 million-strong population.

France has also put into effect a new ban on Islamic hijab, enforcing a fine worth EUR 150 (USD 216) on Muslim women who appear in public places wearing a burqa or niqab.

There is a similar ban in Belgium and lawmakers in the Netherlands are also working on a bill to forbid women from covering their faces in schools and government institutions.

Animal Lover: Yeah, there aren't many Pakistani immigrants in Belfast, are there?

There was a case in Edinburgh a couple of years ago when a young Sikh guy claimed he had been attacked and his hair cut by the attackers. After a huge Police investigation and press coverage, it turned out he had cut his hair himself. As far as I know, he was never charged with wasting Police time.

Canadian reporters were imprisoned in Sudan for not following Islamic law.

A Christian politician was assassinated in Pakistan for trying to allow freedom to their citizens.

Women have been repeatedly stoned to death in Iran especially, for not wearing those same burqas.

I'm not saying there isn't a growing fear of Islam in the world….but perhaps if they don't want people lashing out against them; and creating laws against their customs….maybe they should try not doing those same things first?????

Animal Lover: I got an email some time ago that some of you might appreciate. It was about the plan to create an Islamic Centre at Ground Zero in New York and the Muslims complaining about the lack of tolerance of the objectors to the plan. It was suggested that perhaps a strip club, a gay bar, a pork butchers, a brothel, etc etc could be built beside it to test the Muslims' tolerance levels.

FogofWar: that's why France outlawed it. It is not actually a religious thing for them to wear it. In fact; Islamic women are to cover up because they are not supposed to stand out. When they come to western nations; being covered head to toe sure would make them stand out huh? They are not required by their religion to wear it; only by some radicals that believe it is mandatory; and will stone them to death if they don't.

*HONEYSMILES*: so sad to read this..as a muslim thought i didnt wear hijab, i myself know the teaching of the islam..it is indeebly compulsory to wear cloth that cover all of the women body, except for their face n palm. but if their face is too beautiful n pretty, the women are compulsory to wear hijab..please respecting others religion is a very nice attitude...its not radical to wear hijab..the radical thing is when ones forcing a women to do that against her will...(as muslim, we need to do our teaching in our own free will, thought i dont think i'll even wear hijab through my life, but i'll definitely wear a casual attire that cover up as the islam teaching required)..(*.*)

I'm not a Muslim, nor a woman, but nobody is going to tell me I can't rock a headscarf (okay maybe in an airport and bank).

Oh, but it has religious connotations? Better add unnecessary gravitas. Stat!

much of the islamic teachings should be commended but the ignorant seem to want to apply their own trbal values and call it the teachings of mouhammed.

perhaps the the islamic zealots would have more credibility if they made men wear a hijab too.

braveheart32: Its a simple matter but muslims dont want to accept the truth.Muslims want to eat their cake and have it.They want it their way all the time. They want the world to respect and accept their faith but they do not want to respect or accept other people faith.Everytime they say, Islam is a religion of peace but the muslims have proven themselve to be the most intolerant group when it comes to livng peacefully with thier neighbours.

The case of the hijab and all the other muslims covering paraphenelia is simple:Until muslim contries stop forcing other people of other faith and custom to adhere by islamic tenets cases like the Iranian woman with hijab who was attacked would continue.People just want things to be balanced and fair but proponents of Islam want it their way only.As long as islam , as a religion , refuses to move with time it would never be able to prove its claim of been a religion of peace.

Sarcastic Dots: "Until muslim contries stop forcing other people of other faith and custom to adhere by islamic tenets cases like the Iranian woman with hijab who was attacked would continue."

This makes no sense. So, by that logic, you dislike the fact that certain Muslim nations are intolerant, so you want to be just as intolerant?

What is the incentive to get these nations to change if we can't even hold onto our own ideals? It's basically saying that their way of life is right, and ours is wrong.

lavendar_star: I think its wrong for anyone to be attack for how they are dressed and for people to say well they would in Islamic country for how women in west would dress: two wrongs don't make a right and if we in the Western world wants a moral high ground then not being tough on these type of crimes are wrong. Furthermore, Christianity is not sinless when it comes to female equality thru the ages as are other religions as Sarcastic Dot stated.

However, I do have a problem with women covering themselves completely and the inequality that Muslim women have in some Islamic states, but that my personal opinion towards it, the bottom line for me in free society women have the right to dress how they want and to say otherwise makes people in the West no better than the Islamic countries they condemn. I do think that some Muslim women in the West wear their strict religious dress in responds to Western hostility or the overt sexuality of female dress in the West. I watched a documentary on Saudi Arabia (which Britain and America are best friends with:Hypocrites anyone ) about how women have to ask men permission to leave their house wtf. So there is a problem in some Islamic states but to constantly be bashing them is not helping to engage them in change or make women in Islamic countries be able to turn to people in the West for support regarding their inequality.

Some of these replies to this post suggest that Islamophobia is alive and well and nobody seems to care about the young women being attack and making excuse for the crime committed against her. I do hope the young women is ok and the perpetrator of the crime is brought to justice. Because thats what makes a decent society and to suggest otherwise make people no better than the people they condemn.

Np19: ofcourse islamaphobia is alive and the media hasnt helped by constantly reporting the issue. the truth is if someone wants to wear a hijab so what let them! adn 9/10 the so called islamaphobic individuals are cowards who will find only the weak and vunerable ones to prey on.
why would you have a problem with a woman who chooses to cover herself? ill tell you something opression is when you force a person to do something they wish not to do, if you are going around calling to ban the hijab etc then what you are really doing is opressing ones right to dress they want, dont listen to the media go out one day and ask any muslim woman who is covered if she is forced to cover or if she HAPPILY chooses to cover, the results will be the opposite of what the media claims.
if someone wants to follow the rules and laws of their religion why do you condem them? i mean if christians look in the bible they will find in 1 corinthians 11:6 :-
If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head.

go and find me one verse in the quran that orders the above! why dont we sit here a condem the fact that the bible insites us to cut womens hair off if they dont cover??? i was born and raised in the u.k and never had experienced any islamaphobic behavior until after 9/11 thanks to the media! i dont sit here and say i have a problem with half dressed women so why should anyone have a problem with a fully dressed woman, if she dosent want to show you her face then thats her choice!!!!!!

if iran and saudi force women to cover then judge them as a country and not all muslims as a nation!

and go read the bible and then go condem nuns who also cover their hair!!!!

sorry but this really makes me angry
