Is pain our penalty for being human?
Why so much pain?
Why do some people enjoy inflicting pain on others? Or for that matter enjoy receiving pain?

near50ohoh: If you looked at it from a religious perspective, they would suggest the people involved had no conscience. Some humanities would agree with that.
But others would suggest the possibility that they are unable to experience pain, due to a brain anomaly, therefore have no concept for it. And not having it they cannot understand it in others. It's an unbearable curiousity for them as a result. Like an itch they cannot scratch and they obsess about it until they have to act on themselves and others to find out what it is. Like a scientist who cannot comprehend the condition they are studying. They keep poking at it till they destroy the object of study.
Then again, there really are people who just can't grasp things about people and their moods/sensitivities and err blindly. Like somebody stumbling in the dark. They didn't fully grow up or were not taught to relate well with others.
Some people go through life and are rarely tested so they can't grasp that others have bruises (if you will). So they keep poking on a bruise without understanding why it would hurt them but has never caused them any sensitivity.
And then there are a rare few who quite enjoy watching someone writhe in pain or beg for it to be meted out to them Who derive sexual pleasure from the experience.

Does that help, JB?

jbananaz234: Pain seems to last longer than joy and leaves an indelible mark.
Yet no matter how dark the night the sun rises again giving us hope....even when we arent ready or willing to see the light, hope is always there lurking.

For eveyone who has pain, suffered loss....you must first endure the pain, the grief, the loss, the desolation, the abandonment, the helplessness, the endless abyss of self-incrimination....

tight, tighter, tightest

Cry till there are no tears left, rant till there is no breath left.....

try peace next hun. We're in it for the short term. If you believe in God and an after life, this lifetime is but a second out of eternity. Eternity is love forever, all the blessed people who you kept close here, in your arms eternally. This week or so that hits home doesn't it? With our mutual friend's issues.

jbananaz234: Good point near! Peace is eternally given, it is up to us to seek it and give our egos up to it. The one thing i have learned is that somewhere, every moment, there is a friend in pain. Some are friends we have not yet met, and most times we are unaware of the specific pain... but NOONE is immune.

Yes those are good working definitions for peace. But sometimes peace comes from empathy which you expressed by seeing your friends in pain too. Even when you feel your own pain. That's what makes the difference between a rational person and someone who is narcissistically self absorbed.
And acceptance that with life, come pain and pleasure, numbness and intolerance. Nobody escapes them. Nobody gets out alive. God never promised a life with no hardship, He just promised to love and support us through it. I wish i knew where to find the poem "Footsteps". I''ll look again. :

Mz Demeanor: There is a Buddhist practice called tonglen (Tibetan for "giving and taking" or "sending and receiving" ) of accepting and embracing pain and suffering for yourself and for others and not running from it. A whole different approach than what we usually want to do which is run the hell away from it and wish it away and hide.

"The tonglen practice is a method for connecting with suffering —ours and that which is all around us— everywhere we go. It is a method for overcoming fear of suffering and for dissolving the tightness of our heart. Primarily it is a method for awakening the compassion that is inherent in all of us, no matter how cruel or cold we might seem to be." - Pema Chodron
