Debate club Geoff: Harking back to my school days, I was thinking about when I was in the debate club and how one of the inevitable exercises we had to do would, perhaps, be a worthwhile exercise here. Pick a topic, decide which side of the argument you agree with, and then argue for the dissenting camp. And - here's the kicker that always annoyed me when I was at school - you have to argue to win. It can be very challenging to accomplish this, it can certainly be enlightening. Especially as it can both cause you to re-evaluate your opinions, it is also a very helpful tool in learning to evaluate research sources. So I suggest a new club, were some of Wire's more vocal disputants (I suppose I should place myself amongst this number), have to argue the counter position on some of their most cherished opinions. //Edit - I'll put the link in here Club: Debate Club (Edited by Geoff) Geoff: Start whatever conversation you want. I would ask that no one touches abortion, at least for a while. Simply because I don't want the club destroyed by the emotional baggage that comes with that issue. And you can research to your heart's delight. There are threads that have been going for years on Wire. Karma: Imagine no positions. I wonder if you can. No need for stand for anything. A brotherhood of meh. Imagine all the sheeple ignoring all the world. One Bar: This sounds like fun. I've never argued for the opposition before. I want to have a go at being a YEC; just give me time to grow a silly tash. oooREDEYEooo: "Eye believe in conjunction with the cyber space available...that we have become a 'voyeuristic' global society...example...the trivial machinations of things such as a women tripping over on google cam going viral...when meanwhile...a civilian having their head blown off in war remains nothing but 'tucked away' news"... oooPATHETIC-AS-A-WHOLE-EYEooo (Edited by oooREDEYEooo) Zoey234: I dont think I can do it ... I have enough trouble trying to win arguments for my own position let alone help the opposition ... but I admire your open mindedness ... LiptonCambell: Hmmm...I'm not sure if this is actually working...i mean, with debate clubs, you have alot more structure, with introductions and the like.... Whereas what we have seems to be more....parody...where people try to appear as their counter, rather than being the counter. One Bar: The 'problem' is that its members all share very similar views. Except on astrology where all you lot are wrong. We need to attract folk with opposite views as us, or choose topics that we can disagree on. LiptonCambell: I dunno....it seems all posts so far have a snarkiness to it....as if each of us are hoping to be proven wrong... | Philosophy Chat Room 14 People Chatting Similar Conversations |
