charging your teen rent while in school? (Page 2)

TTauresa
TTauresa: You reap what you sow!! Raising children is very hard but you must lead by example, the kid did not ask to be born, dont punish HIM for getting away with chatting with you as he does. Chat with him about manners and respect, and it goes without saying that YOU should treat him with manners and respect. My parents never charged me but taught me the value of money and how to be responsible in other ways.

Zanjan: I never made my children pay for anything while they were going to school. Very few can go to school full time and hold down a job without their marks suffering. My kids desperately wanted extra money to spend so they got paper routes...I let them keep their jobs as long as their marks were good. They earned so they kept their pay.

I did insist they do their chores, like clean up their room and own messes. I taught them domestic skills - that was only during their spare time, not a duty.

From the time my kids were born, I regularly set aside money for their post secondary education, which included costs of living in residency if they needed to. On graduation, we handed them the money and said it was up to them to make it stretch.

Fortunately, all my kids lived at home for most of their post secondary education, which they were able to obtain locally. They paid nothing until after they graduated and got a job. By then, it was time for them to get their own place anyway.

If a kid is working to put himself through school, the parents should be waiting on him hand and foot, you bet!

However, there's no excuse for rudeness - teach the kid how to respect. If the parent fails to achieve this, it's the parent who should be punished.

bahcatha returns: Most loser kids live at home until they are well past 30 any more, they are scared to grow up and move away. Parents who allow this mentality to exist are not doing their kids any favors. life is hard, college is supposed to prepare you for life, dorms aren't free, nor is anything else in life, now is when a person should learn to pay their own way, and stop relying on mommy and daddy.

rubie26: this was back in 2004 so i dont know if the law has changed any but i think its still the same here for legal working age , we also get our taxfile numbers through our school as well we do have some advantages for this kind of thing in this country though but yes a family run business here any age can work in it as long as there is an adult present so if they own a tabacco shop or little shop of sorts an eight year old can sell cigarettes but cant buy them lol go figure aye

Secret Mastermind: I thought to sell cigarettes you had to be old enough to smoke just like with selling Alcohol and have a license. So you dont have any special restrictions on liquor and smoke sales restrictions in Australia?

rubie26: again im not sure if any has changed ,with that but we do have new smoking rules and only one register service of selling cigs and they are not aloud to be on desplay so it could be possible that this has all changed alot of public areas we are not aloud to smoke at , we have alot of anti smoking campainging happening here so i quess its a good thing ,in all states you must be 18 and show id to go to a bar night club or by cigerettes

ALYMKKMYLA: depending on the age of the teen, I believe at a certain age 16/17 a teen is old enough to manage the struggles of part time work and study & need to learn to pay their way in this world, unfortunately it can seem harsh, but in the long run it isn't, its being a good parent preparing your kid for the big bad world alone.

xHollyxRose: I think it's really insensitive and cynical to charge your children rent. If they have a job, they'll want a car and cell phone of their own so their job will be covering the expenses of that. Besides, how much can a teenager make in today's world? $150 a week at minimum wage? Plus scarce hours because they have to work around school? And some parents have the audacity to charge them rent? LOL These are your children- you brought them into the world. They are YOUR responsibility. There are other, less relentless ways to teach your teenager about life, money and responsibility... O_o If your teenager happens to be a tech engineer for Google, sure, charge em rent but not if they work 20 hours a week at grocery outlet... Also, if you're that crappy to charge your teen rent, what's the use? You'll be kicking them out flat on their butts in just a year or two when they hit 18.
