Begging Strangers

ensentyana
ensentyana: The thing that astounds me about bingo and slots and poker etc, is not the much lamented lack of random winners. It's not the same old faces on the leaderboard day in and day out or the 50 credit return on a 600 credit investment. It's the begging.

Now I'm not talking about friends asking friends to help out, because clearly that's another beast entirely and between the parties involved with no need for me to worry.

I'm talking about asking random strangers whom you have never met to financially support your gambling addiction or supply your entertainment.

I mean, if you couldn't afford to go bowling or to the cinema or wherever else the cool kids go these days, would you stand outside the venue, getting in people's personal space and begging for the price of admission?

Most people would be appalled at the very idea of doing that.

So why in the name of sanity do people find it acceptable to not only beg in the room but also to send private messages to the unfortunate few who have yet to retreat behind the safety of the privacy settings?

Is it because the people they beg from are anonymous. Because they can't see the physical indications of incredulity and disgust on the faces of their victims? Or perhaps they don't see it as begging in the traditional sense of the word. They're not homeless or dirty, they're not walking around the streets in the only pair of trousers they own with their shoes falling off their feet. So they're not REALLY beggars. Right?

Right. Because the majority of beggars we see in the streets are genuinely in need. Even if they created that need through their own actions, they still beg for survival (usually).

Beggars in the street make me feel sad and guilty and helpless.

Beggars in the bingo room make me sick.

Rant for the week. Check.

FlashW: It is said: Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you.
This implies that the asking, seeking, and knocking are all continuous actions, and that prayer to be effective should also be a continual habit, rather than an occasional plea.
