Angelina Jolie had preventive double mastectomy

OCD_OCD
OCD_OCD: She apparently has an at risk gene and lost her mother to breast cancer.

I asked myself if I would do the same thing as a preventive measure. The surgery is gruesome, but I would do it.

Mz Demeanor: I think I would get the procedure done too if it would reduce the risks like that. She had an 87 percent chance of getting it reduced to less than 5 percent. Being she is Angelina Jolie, she, of course, had the advantage of going to a top notch cancer centre and to have top notch reconstructive surgery done. I'm not sure if I would even have the reconstructive surgery done a) because I don't know if that would be covered by our health care system, and b) that it can be problematic health-wise.

OCD_OCD: I'd definitely have them put boobs back on. I don't want to look like a boy. Lots of my friends have boob jobs with varying degrees of what I'd call "success". The ones that are under the muscle seem better, the ones that aren't massive are the best. The ones that are on really skinny girls look like bolt-ons because there's no flesh to cover the implant. Those are the scariest ones if you ask me.

Two of my friends had "gummy bears", which do seem to look more natural.

Mz Demeanor: Something more natural looking makes sense rather than those "bolt-ons" that look like a cantaloupe cut in half and stuck under the skin. In saying I wasn't sure if I'd get reconstructive surgery done, I was under the misunderstanding that all reconstructive surgery included some type of implant and I've read about too many problems with the silicon, gel, saline ones from hardening to leaking and all kinds of other problems. But I just read about procedures using tissue, fat, etc. from the patient being used for reconstruction. That seems the least problematic and healthy.

In my search for info on reconstructive surgery, I stumbled across something that shocked me: a website for women to get free boob jobs by interacting with men on this site and having them make donations for their surgery. http://myfreeimplants.com
WTF??? The internet never ceases to amaze me!!!

~LoisLane~: ^^ @ EtceteranYou do have breasts tho and can totally get breast cancer too. (knock wood)
Im not sure if I would do it with out knowing anything first. If they think they might have seen something, ,then I think I would do it. I wouldn't just go and do it tho . Surgery *Shudders*

Jennie Garth also did the same thing.

OCD_OCD: I guess having friends as nurses makes me less fearful of having surgery.

I had a cancerous growth taken off my chest (the perils of being uber-white) and the doctor was concerned that it would leave a scar. I told him I wasn't concerned about the scar, I'd rather get rid of it and make up a really good story about how I ended up with a scar on my chest. Unfortunately, it faded to the point that you can't even see it, so I never did get a chance to decide which story would work the best: a knife fight or tangling with a wolf. :lmafo:

Reemy_: Couldn't believe when I read that on the news yesterday. I mean it is one's health so you will do everything it takes to ensure that you live a long healthy life, even at the cost of one's beauty. Although she did have them reconstructed with plastic surgery after, still must have been extremely painful
She really is lucky that she had enough money to do all of that. Many who are told they will get breast cancer or already got it & have done the surgery can't afford to get fakes ones replaced

lavendar_star
lavendar_star: I think good on her, I don know to my knowledge that I have any female relatives who had breast cancer and so its decsion I may never face, I think as a mother it sounds like the right choice for her. I lucklily live in the UK where women who have history of breast cancer in their relatives can get checked for this cancerous gene and then we the right advice can make the same decsion as Jolie ( free on the NHS), they featured a few on the news.

I think the trauma and suffer both phyical and mental that one has to go through when you have cancer even though there's is now a high surival rate must makes her and other women choice to have this preventable measure a tough but a brave and pratical choice.

I not that into clelebrity culture but when a very high profile celebrity makes her private health problem public it can only help with other women seeking help and advice on the matter. In the Uk a couple of years ago a very famous relaity star had cevical cancer which she tragically died from she was only 26 and had two young sons, it saw a big surge of young women being tested. I wasnt the biggest fan of Jolie but I defo have great respect for her now and especcilally as she was still doing her charity work alongside her treatment.

drywitty: What happens with the nipples depends on the procedure. Sometimes the natural nipples are actually moved. Some doctors try to keep as much of the original parts as possible.

GeraldtheGnome: It was gutsy, especially her admission about having that done, who knows that measure may have saved her life, in fact her telling others about it DID save at least some other lives. This is a fact, I have seen the proof.

Captain Canada
Captain Canada: I don't like Jolie as a actress she is far from one nor she all that beautiful to be praised as a Goddess (but that's my opinion )
On one hand she did help in the awareness department to women around the world regarding breast cancer. but on the other hand she also used the news to let the entertainment business know that she is still alive and looking for a job any job
