lori100: Wire generates $17,370 a month?? ...and still demands buying gold memberships saying they make little money...

Geoff: Wire generates that from people signing up for gold membership - and much of it would go to hosting costs. The price of hosting a website of this size with 1.3 million visitors a month would be substantial.

Robot Seb: That's an estimate value Lori although a good example of revenue vs cost would be something like the SQL licenses on old Wire which cost thousands per year. There's still domain name fees, data center fees, and hardware costs for stuff like servers, etc...

Gold membership is only in a few places and a semi-temporary thing as sponsors become available in those areas.

OCD_OCD: Some people don't understand that the cost in both money and physical time is expensive. The difference between gross and net can be massive. The good thing is that the owners of wire set it up, using their time and yes, their money, in the HOPES of generating a profit. A profit is never guaranteed. Wire Gold is a requirement, like Seb said, in areas where the existing costs of service are greater and the potential to break even is low.

No one should expect anyone to run a website or other company that they benefit from (such as Wireclub members) for totally altruistic reasons. The owners of Wire should not be expected to bite the financial bullet or devote their time and energies to something that we enjoy and do it for free. We could get barraged by ads and spam, but we don't, do we?

I'd just like to say thanks. I hope you guys make a mint.

Corwin: I'm just curious though... there is one statistic I would like to see, which I'm sure could be gleaned from the existing data quite easily. ---

Out of these 5 million, it's obvious that many of these accounts are "inactive"... or consist of people who, for instance, have created an account, gotten bored after a few hours, then never returned... but never bothered to delete their accounts.

What I'd be interested in knowing, is what is the total number of members with verified accounts that have logged in at least once over the last 12 months?

No_User_Name: On other sites ive passed by ive noticed they have a joining date and last activity date underneath their avatar. I think a feature like that here would give a better indication of how many users there are and not just members.

I for one have checked out a site, some even require you to create an account before you can visit, looked around, not liked what i saw and left. Leaving that account sitting dead, some place you can even delete accounts.

SITS has a great screen shot of chat room activity from 4 years ago. biff deboffe's Picture

I dont do chat rooms but at any given time you go to the chat room section you will never see this many chatters ......forums are pretty well dead ......so where are all these members???
