Horses Should Be Used For Travelling? Staci: lol i think horses should be used more for traveling instead of racing, it would save people spending money on buying a car, petrol/diesel n everything, and help the world be a little greenier and i think it would be a lot more fun going around on a horse to a store than in a car lol less traffic jams less car accidents more horse poop around though lol Nosferatu: I've heard all the horse manure that piled up in towns was bad for the environment. Why natural poop is bad for the environment is beyond me though. WAYTOBIG: Great idea. Than you have the humane society call animal abuse. Humans were, are and will never be content with bringing forms of transportation from the past. VancouverSarah: The thing is this is in no way better for the environment. Think of the amount of grain we would have to raise, the amount of fertile land we'd have to give over to horse paddocks. Going backwards is not the answer, more fuel efficient technology is. And it's not so much that manure is bad for the environment is that it's bad to have around where humans like to eat and drink. Manure is full of bacteria that can contaminate water that causes serious illness and even death. MaryJaneLight: You know all that methane from those horses will kill the o-zone layer and cause "climate change" right? VancouverSarah: I found a great article about horses in urban environments: http://www.enviroliteracy.org/article.php/578.html Interesting stuff! I disagree with this statement though: When Woodrow Wilson rode a carriage in his 1917 inaugural, the last president to do so, he marked the end of the horse as a status object. Horses became status symbols after cars became common. The amount of resources it takes to look after a horse is simply too high for the majority of people. WAYTOBIG: Not so true I have 5 horses and the expenses are like owing a car. The cost versus the love and affection of these beautiful animals Priceless Give my a horse don't give a human in a car VancouverSarah: That's great if you can live somewhere you can keep them. I don't have that luxury. I would have to pay rather steep boarding fees for any horses I had. I wish I could afford it; I love riding! IceMist: ehh i think it's a little extreme. plus i think it's an incredibly bad idea for neighborhoods/cities that are dangerous. WAYTOBIG: Living in the City has it's great advantages and rewards. Lots of concrete sidewalks, tall buildings, pollution and crime, easy access to ethnic foods and entertainment and supermarkets at arms reach. However living in the countryside(rural areas)it has it's disadvantages. We have to breath clean air, view vast amounts of green fields and trees. We have to calculate how many kilometers to our neighbors house and to the hardware store to buy hoes to plant our own vegetable garden. I travel about 150km from home to work very day so i can live among my horses and beef cattle. Yes I contribute to the destruction of the Ozone with my travelings Nosferatu: Living in southern California just outside of LA with the worst traffic in the world I wouldn't mind travelling by horse for awhile. pAuL DaVid: Haha. I could just see a lane next to the left of the carpool lane. Horse rider's lane. (Must purchase horse express pass) 2MuchMan!: road apples are nasty too! think how dirty your street would be if you had a horse for each person you see in a car...poop piles up fast Nosferatu: Face it horses rock and we are gifted that we are able to have had those fine domesticated animals to help us throughout history. It was one of the reasons that we have been able to get more than the Africans because there animals weren't able to be farmed and eaten for food. We also rode those things during war to conquest other nations and steal their resources. Now we take it for granted that our cars are pimped out and we just bomb the F out of peasant countries for their oil, but way back when they helped us destroy enemies and wipe out the Mayans by malaria. Go horses, pigs, sheep, etc.! WAYTOBIG: All the poop collected to be given free to farmers for organic vegetables. I just can't see the harm poop can do. otcclass: I would love to go back to the horse and buggie days but since everyone is in a hurry to get here and get there and not really wanting to stop and smell the roses or take time to get anywhere then those days are definately in our past... |
