What's the Difference Between Dating and Courting

Mint Chip
Mint Chip: I'm often asked why I dont date. As a muslim, even a very very very moderate one, i'm not really allowed to date; no boyfriends, relationships FWB (as if). Also, I've never really been asked, or whatever. Anyway the conversation continues, and the variations of the same question always come to play. "if you can't date, how will you know who to marry?" I usually explain that we are allowed to Court, which i've always assumed to mean a traditional sort of dating-with an intent to marry, without the sex that comes with modern dating (I'm well aware of the third date rule ). Recently, people argued that dating and courting are one and the same. Is this what you believe? What is the difference between Dating and Courting?

Neanderthal Gangsta: Dating and Courting is the same thing, the latter being a more antiquated term, which automatically evokes a different standard because of how cultural acceptance of pre-marital sex has evolved in the last 100 years.

There are plenty of people who date, without sex, and they call it dating.

How often does a woman "date" a guy if she knows, full well, she will never marry that person. No, usually a woman is dating a guy who still has the potential to one day be her husband. If she's convinced he's not, she usually breaks it off. There are exceptions, but that's the general rule.

So the criteria of "courting" being different because it's with the intent to marry is kinda b.s. because dating itself is also often with the intent to marry, although it's not outwardly talked about because a log of young people are in a relationship for companionship and simply don't want to think about marriage yet.

And finally, you can be a Muslim to whatever level of moderation you decide, not anyone else. It's not your families decision, even though they think it is. There are extremely religious Muslims as well as secular/cultural Muslims. The point is, don't follow rules simply because some older person tell you you have to, unless the older person is me.

somewherepurple: It's a good difference to have, since we do need a term for both, but most people put them together. I was seeing someone when I met my now-wife. For 5 months, we maintained something more than a friendship, but were not dating or being physical...that is, courting. Eventually, I broke it off with the then-girlfriend, and started dating my now-wife. Started dating in the middle of the week--including kissing that same day, and had sex that weekend.
