deacon7771: I am not sure, why wouldn't it be able to accommodate the 5.0 ltr. V8? I have an '89 Thunderbird, it similar in size to the Cougar Xr7, sadly the Thunderbird is in derelict condition, with the V6 in it, it looks to me that there is plenty of room for the V8, and I just happen to have a 5.0 ltr block, taken from an E-150 van (too bad, not the Mustang version of the 5.0 L). I still have not done anything with the Thunderbird, I really should but I just don't have time. Someday, maybe, I will fix up the old T-bird, and you can bet I will try the 5.0 L. V8, and if I must then I will replace the transmission, even the rear end if that is what needs to happen. I think that relatively small T-bird needs a bigger engine, and the 5.0 L would be good. I am pretty sure that you COULD put the 5.0 L into your Cougar, but you might also need to change a few other things, and than might be troublesome (for example the Ford AOD transmission, and you might need a different rear end differential also). But honestly, if you have the time and desire to do it, it CAN be done. Remember the "Pantera" cars? If they can fit a V8 that big into that tiny little plastic play toy car, then for sure you can put a 5.0 L. into a Cougar.

P.S. You might also need to consider the front end suspension, you will probably need stronger springs to support the heavier engine, but it can be done.
