careyal: always go rescue! if you want a certain breed you can put in a form with the shelters and they will call you first when they get that breed in or look for specific rescues for your breed, most breeds have a devoted rescue or a few.

Cams_Mom: very willing to purchase, IF I can't find what I want out there via Shelters, Pounds, Rescue groups and private placement.

@Careyal, you could be waiting months, even years for that pure bred dog to come into a shelter or pound. There is nothing wrong with purchasing from a reputable breeder; one who does a background and home visit (where possible) on potential owners, who doesn't breed just to breed (1 breeding a year should be sufficent), has a list of homes already approved, who does DNA health testing/not just a vet check up and shots, who offers a contract, willing to take the dog back and supports their breed specific rescue group.

Using a search engine, type in the breed of dog you are looking for and add 'Rescue' to the end. Petfinder.org is a great place to start, as is PetHarbor. There are a number of sites like these 2 mentioned on the web that could help you find what you are looking for.

careyal: you could have to wait but no longer than you may have to wait on a breeder list. at least try rescues first and purebreds come into shelters a lot they usually just get adopted first if there is no list. also try more than one rescue or shelter, and as i said, most breeds have a specific rescue for that breed. it should be more about the connection with a particular dog than the breed anyway. who knows you may think you want a pure Shepard and fall in love with a pit mix. a breed is a starting point but when it comes to pets its better to let your heart guide you unless you are trying to specifically breed which i would discourage because millions of great animals get put down every day that need a home, do not contribute to that number. plus sometimes it is hard to tell if they are really reputable, some puppy mills hide their shameful breeding places and have someone who stages taking the puppies to a reputable looking place. also pet store puppies come from mills so do not adopt from them.
@ white bow, have you considered some of these places: http://www.giantschnauzerrescue.net/, http://www.vsgiantschnauzerrescue.org/PageView.aspx?p=4, http://www.socalgiantschnauzerrescue.org/, http://www.ht-z.org/, http://giantschnauzerclubofamerica.com/club-information/rescue/, www.facebook.com/pages/Giant-Schnauzer-Rescue/232715120123386, http://www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org/
and these are just a few of them out there, as i said every breed has several rescue sites, its worth a shot first and you will pay more for a specific breed rescue yes, but just as much if not less than a breeder. plus, rescue dogs are more grateful anyway.
