Cool Things About Calgary

please feel welcome to correct or add to these cool trivia points:

We have 2 rivers, the Bow, and the Elbow. The Elbow is quite shallow and most summer days will find lots and lots of rafts. It's cool to be in a park & watch them go by, some are just mattresses and others are very cool and elaborate - last wknd there was a blow-up raft of a castle, lol. In late summer, spots of the river will get so shallow that rafters need to get out & walk to more depth - which is just perfect for family fun in the river.

We have the most miles of trails & pathways, and even in the heart of the city there are signs in the parks to watch out for coyotes, and drivers often have to slow down for deer or geese/goslings to cross the roads.

We have this HUGE HILL called Nose hill, that has a kind of grass on it that is the only kind left in the world, and the grass is actually decended from the grasses the buffalo used to eat when they roamed Nose Hill.

We have an official Provincial Park in Calgary called Fish Creek. You can get there by transit - bus or train. There are picnic sites that are paved & have tables to accomodate people in wheelchairs or with mobility issues.

We are a very green city, and as one goes walking/exploring, there are many many many streets that are canopied with the trees, creating a very cool tree-roof-top to the streets & making for some beautifully picturesque neighbourhoods.

Trees, we have several protected trees in the city that are over 100 years old, that are designated as Heritage Trees. You can spot them easily, first because they are SO BIG, and also because if they are designated there will be a little plaque to tell you about the tree. When I say BIG, I lived across from one, and judging from my 4th floor window, it had to be about 7 stories tall.

We have an awesome skateboard park called Millenium Park. I suppose most cities have one, but ours is the coolest public one I've seen. It's very big and it has all sorts of concrete hills & humps to get some really decent air going on. It's very cool to picnic there and see all the talent & tricks people can do.

peace!

Don't forget about the riverboat cruise along the river during the summer or all the cool dinosaur statues at the zoo!
