Cities

Cities
Cities reflect the true ruthless and destructive nature of mankind. In the 21st Century a larger percentage of the world’s population live in cities than in rural areas or the countryside. In 1950 there were only four cities with more than 1 million people: London (UK), Paris (France), Tokyo (Japan) and Beijing (formerly Peking in China). In the year 2005 there were more than 500 cities world wide with more than 1 million people. These cities include classical cities like Paris, Rome and London but also newer cities like Guangzhou, Sydney and Kinshasa. But what is the true personality of the “big bad” cities and what, despite its features, size and population, makes a true city.

Classic Thompson destination Cities
Everyone knows them; they are the classic destinations that are the signatures of the Western world. They are the golden oldies (or to some the pompous bastards!). Most of them have succeeded to reinvent themselves through the ages and have gained international cultural capital status. They are also some of the most diverse cities on the planet considering the amount of foreign workers (illegal and legal). These cities include London, Paris, Madrid, Lisbon, Seville, Barcelona, Vienna, Salzburg, Rome, Bologna, Venice, Milan, Zurich, Bordeaux, Nice, Genoa, Naples, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Brussels, Antwerp, Edinburgh, Dublin, Stockholm, Berlin, Dresden and many more.

Economic Power players
These include the four economic capitals of the world: New York, London, Hong Kong and Tokyo. Some individuals might include Singapore, Paris, Frankfurt, Rome, Los Angeles and Dubai. These are the epitomes of the ‘big bad modern cities’. They are rough, ruthless and merciless. They are everything that people hate (to some love) about cities. These cities embrace the noise, pollution and corrupt scum they themselves produce. If these cities were men there would have been constant arguments about c^&* sizes (replaced in reality by “who has the tallest building?”).

The new guys
As nations become more economically developed new cities emerge. Some have existed for centuries but recently had a face lift. These cities will probably threaten the previous economic power players and classic cities. Cities like Dubai, Riyadh, Shanghai, Seoul, Doha, Shenzhen and even Moscow (although actually also a classic).

So who’s who in the big zoo of cities? It is for you to decide and rate which are which…

The Developing World

Posted June 20 2008 04:41 AM   Mood: Aggravated   Doing:

So here I am sitting in my campus library, bored to death, during my mid-term break. This is extremely sad, since I have just finished my exams and I am thus supposed to be partying my guts out with friends. Yet here I am bored in the library writing complete c%x^. It is a true b^y@$ to be a single guy in denial (if you know what I mean...) without a drivers license in a developing country that gets scarier by the day. So what to do... what to do??

I decided I will join this free (could not afford it otherwise) chat room to make more friends. Humph!!!! What to do... What to do??? I would also like an Italian lover but after scrolling through the first few pages they all turned out to be either not in denial (if you know what I mean...), body-builders (a bit above my league) or slightly looked like pedophiles (which I do not want to be associated with!!!!). So I thought maybe there is more potential in the USA . Good Grief! I was mistaken. Again everyone was either not in denial, patriotic (gross!!!) or had Satanist intentions (not attractive).

So what is left in the world if you cant even find someone to talk with on the freaking internet!!! Aw well maybe there is some potential in France or the UK. Like old Byron said "Tis strange but true, for the truth is always strange - stranger than fiction."
