Love is needed or not!

Hey guys,
                       I am young boy in chennai. I have a doubt whether love is useful or not. Because one of my friend lost all thing by means of love.
The girl left my friend and married another guys. Now my friend is at the stage of mental .
He losed his life because of love.
So please tell me whether this love is needed or not.
