Now you don't have to keep checking your inbox or home page to see if you have any new messages. An icon will appear at the top next to 'account settings' when new messages come in saving you countless trips to the inbox.

Yes I am still here, don't have much time to blog these days with my many jobs. Yes I changed the design <STRONG>again</STRONG> that will probably be the last time for awhile. The new design is much cleaner and I hope easier to use, I notice already a positive impact on how many people sign up and how long they stick around. As usual with design changes I might have missed some things (the logout button...) so please message me if you find something that is broken. I will try and post more about what I am working on, some exciting stuff is coming

We have added buttons to the bottom of each post that let you submit to stumbleUpon and digg. The idea is the help promote your blog by getting it noticed. If you see a post you like help get the word out and submit it!

Message conversations

If you have sent or received messages lately you will have noticed that your entire conversation (or thread) is not displayed right under the message you are viewing. When you reply to a message it no longer includes a copy of the original message, this should make this much simpler for everyone. We are working hard to improve the messaging on the site so keep exploring that section. Check back here for further updates to wireclub.com!

Spring Cleaning

You might have noticed the top of the page has changed a lot in the last few days, no it is not broken, we are removing the top header completely to make the page more compact and easier to use. As of today the page looks a little odd because the login box is still up there, finding it a new home is the next phase. On the home page the login box will probably move under the signup box and we will add a dedicated login page linked from the navigation bar. Of course we have to make sure people can still find it, it is harder than it looks to find an obvious place for it.

As part of the effort to improve the WireClub experience we are working on making the site faster all-around. It is hard to build a site that runs quickly, lots of challenges don't arise until you are really busy. We are starting with some of the simpler things so we can see an immediate improvement. Most of the things we are doing should be invisible but we will be simplifying a few things and getting rid of a few design elements. Overall the site should get cleaner and faster in the next few weeks.

People to meet

Meeting people on WireClub is easy but where do you get started? The great thing about a social networking site like WireClub is you only need one friend to get started building your network, from a single friend you can see all their friends and all their friends of friends. If you don't have any friends yet there should be a link on your home page to the friend finder tool, this will pair you up with someone else who used the friend finder. This is a great way to meet new people because you know you are both looking.

On your home page there is also a “People to meet” page that shows you random people each time you login. These are all people who have logged in recently so you don't end up messaging someone who is no longer active.

You can join or create clubs and meet people with the same interests as you, tell your friends about clubs you think they would be interested in so clubs become more popular and more people find out about it. When browsing someone's profile you can also check out what clubs and interests they have, this lets to get to know them a bit and see if it is someone you want to get to know better.

If you want a more advanced way to find people the search lets you search people by all kinds of options, almost all the parts of a person's profile are searchable. Find people from a certain city or people who are interested in the same thing you are!

There are tons of ways to meet people at WireClub, this is just the beginning, have fun!

Two years later

As I was putting the finishing touches on the blog archive you see on the sidebar of all blogs now I noticed I post I made Easter 2005. Wow has it really been more than two years? It's funny, the older you get it seems the faster time goes. Since I finished school and started working the years just fly by! Anyway since we have been around for a fairly long time now some people's blogs are getting very long and it is hard to find posts from a long time ago. The calendar on the top seemed like a great idea when there were only a few months of blogs but now it is almost useless to find anything. That is why we now show each month you have blog posts in, that should be a good solution, at least for a few more years

Oh and I almost forgot, we have also added a blog central where you can see featured bloggers, the top 10 bloggers and more! We are going to be expanding the page in the coming weeks so check back soon, once we have worked out the kinks there will be a "blogs" link on the top of the screen. I missed not having a laptop, nothing like working in bed. This weekend I will be working full time on the site. First up I have to fix a bunch of silly bugs displaying the site in Opera. I am also concerned about the loading time of the site, I see some pages taking >1sec to load and that is way too long. Studies show you have mere seconds to convince someone to stay on your site, better not waste any of that time loading.

The WireClub Blog, Now With Content!

It's back, now with real content you might actually want to read! In the past the WireClub blog was just announcements and other boring stuff but not any more! Now read the inside scoop on what's going on, what problems we face, how we solve them and what we are working on. You know, interesting stuff that people actually might care about. So it's been almost a year since we did any real work on the site, how come? As much fun as this site is to work on something has to pay the bills. To make any real money on a website you need a good stream of search traffic and new users, this comes from search engines, namely Goooooogle. Google has a filter of sorts in place that people have nicknamed the “sandbox” that punishes young sites and prevents them from ranking well for search terms. It was very frustrating to work on the site all day every day and not rank on Google at all, even for relevant terms. With no money coming in it was very hard to find the time to keep working on the site and we let it slide into obscurity. We even tried to sell the site a few times on eBay, hoping it would be bought by someone who could keep it alive. Then this month a big surprise came, we started raking for some terms on Google. Nothing big but it was a sign we were no longer being punished by the sandbox. So that's the story, we will be working on WireClub again part time, and who knows, maybe the site will take off and we will be back on it full time!

Finally fixed the people to meet panel on your homepage. Also loading most pages should be a lot faster, especially if they have many pictures.

I am surprised how well the site works in IE7, considering how new browsers usually destroy everything. One day I have to make the site work better in Opera, there are a few bugs mainly related to the colors of link elements. Browser compatibility is pretty much the worst part of web development so I sure don't have much motivation to fix these things...

So it's been over a year since we did anything to wireclub, time for some maintenance! So far I have sped up a few things such as loading your home page if you have lots of friends and clubs. I will be mostly doing things to improve the speed of the site but if I don't get bored I will add some new features too.

We have also been silently improving the blog engine, when you post a new entry we will automatically ping a few blog services and get your blog listed on a bunch of sites! It seems there was a small glitch with the RSS feeds that was removing the body text but that has been corrected as of today.
